Nashville, Tennessee document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, fax, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in Nashville, Tennessee, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
Nashville Public Library (NPL)
- Printing: 10¢ a page black and white and 25¢ a page color. Library cardholders get free printing up to $10 in value each month [1].
- Paying: the print machines take only $1 bills and coins (nickels, dimes or quarters), not larger bills or credit or debit cards. Each print job is capped at $5 [1].
- Mobile printing: you can email a file to the library print system. Jobs stay in the queue for 2 hours [1].
- Fax and scan: self-service fax and scan machines, run by a commercial service, at Main Library, Bordeaux, Donelson, Hadley Park, Hermitage, Inglewood, Looby, Madison and Pruitt [9][10]. $1.75 for the first page and $1.00 for each additional page; credit or debit card only, no cash [10]. We didn't find a separate price for scanning to yourself.
- Copying: black-and-white photocopies are 10¢ a page, paid with nickels, dimes, quarters or $1 bills [11]; color photocopies are 25¢ a page, and the color copier also takes $5 bills [12]. The Main Library lists both kinds of copier [13].
- Main Library: 615 Church St., (615) 862-5800. Monday–Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. [13]. The Census Geocoder places it in Nashville-Davidson [4]. Closure (posted as of Oct 31, 2026): the Main Library will be closed Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, for the Literary Award Gala [13]. Branch hours are on NPL's locations page [14].
- The UPS Store: it lists 14 open locations in Nashville, plus one marked Coming Soon. Its city page says its stores offer packing, shipping, printing, shredding, notarizing, faxing and mailbox services [15]. We didn't find prices on the store pages; The UPS Store's site says products, services, prices and hours may vary by location [16]. The Census Geocoder places 13 of the 14 inside Nashville-Davidson; the store at 718 Thompson Ln. is in Berry Hill, a separate city inside Davidson County [15][4].

Notary in Nashville
- Nashville Public Library (free): NPL offers a free notary service by appointment at select branches; choose the right branch when you book. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and any witnesses you need, and arrive within 15 minutes of your appointment time. It handles simple documents such as sworn statements, powers of attorney, rental agreements, bills of sale and wills. It won't notarize real estate transactions, vital records, I-9 forms, or documents not in English, and it doesn't offer remote online notarization [2]. NPL's branch pages list notary service at 12 locations: Main Library, Bordeaux, Donelson, Edmondson Pike, Goodlettsville, Hadley Park, Hermitage, Looby, Madison, North, Old Hickory and Pruitt [2][14].
- Davidson County Clerk: the office helps people apply to become notaries, but it does not notarize documents [17].
- The UPS Store: its Nashville page lists notarizing [15].
- Becoming a notary in Davidson County: the application must be notarized. The Metro Council votes on applicants on the first Tuesday of January, March, May, July, September and November; apply 2 weeks before. After you're elected, you file a $10,000 bond from a surety company authorized in Tennessee. Fees are $12.00 for a new or renewal application and $2.00 to file the bond. You supply your own seal; embossed seals aren't accepted [17].
- How notaries are commissioned (statewide): in Tennessee you apply through your County Clerk, are elected by the county commission, buy a surety bond, and then pick up the commission the Secretary of State sends back to the County Clerk [18]. A term is four years [19].
- Fees (statewide law): the Secretary of State quotes Tenn. Code Ann. § 8-21-1201: notaries "are entitled to demand and receive reasonable fees and compensation" [20]. We didn't find a fixed maximum on that page, so ask for the price before the notary starts.

- Register of Deeds hours and photos (two sources differ): the Register's page says appointments run Monday–Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. [21]. The State Department's locator lists Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and doesn't list photos [3], but the Register's own pages offer $15.00 photos [21][22]. Book through the Register's page or call to confirm.
- Tennessee State University: the locator says it is closed to applications on Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday [3].
- Post offices: the locator says to book appointments or see more passport times at usps.com/scheduler. For the Nashville Main Office on Royal Pkwy., it lists walk-ins Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. [3].
- Post office fees (national): a $35.00 acceptance fee and a $15.00 photo fee "if needed" [23].

The State Department's fee page lists 1–3 business day return delivery at $26.87, for passport books only [24]. We couldn't re-read the State Department page on Oct 31, 2026, because it blocked our check. Confirm the fee with the acceptance facility before you pay.

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth, death and marriage certificates (statewide)
- Fees (statewide): the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) Office of Vital Records charges $15.00 for a birth, death, marriage or divorce certificate, and $15.00 for each additional copy. If no record is found, you get a no-record letter for the same fee [5].
- Any county health department (statewide): TDH says all county health departments can issue any birth or death certificate registered statewide, so you don't have to go to the county where the birth or death happened. Bring ID [25][26].
- State office in person (statewide): Tennessee Vital Records, 1st Floor, Andrew Johnson Tower, 710 James Robertson Parkway, Nashville; the entrance is on the Rosa Parks Blvd. side. Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., no appointment needed. It takes cash, check, credit or debit card, or money order [25]. TDH lists free parking on Rev. Kelly M Smith Way off Rosa Parks Blvd. [26].
- By mail (statewide): send the signed application, a photocopy of a government-issued ID with your signature (or a notarized application), and a check or money order payable to Tennessee Vital Records, to the same address [25].
- Online (statewide): TDH doesn't take online orders itself; VitalChek is its only authorized online vendor, and charges extra fees [25].
- Metro Public Health Department: Vital Records at the Lentz Public Health Center, 2500 Charlotte Ave. In person Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Metro holidays. Birth certificates are $15.00, and each additional copy is $15.00. It takes cash, check, money order and credit or debit card [6]. Death certificates are $15, and $15 for each additional copy, for deaths in Nashville and Davidson County since January 1, 1966 [27]. The death certificate page doesn't list forms of payment, so we didn't find them for death records. Questions: 615-340-5611 (birth) or 615-340-5612 (death) [6][27].
- Which birth years Metro Health can issue (two Metro pages differ): the birth certificate page says Metro Health issues Tennessee births only, going back 100 years [6]. The Vital Records overview says certificates are issued for births after 1950 [28]. For an older record, call 615-340-5611 before you go [6].
- State office: the Tennessee Vital Records office at 710 James Robertson Pkwy. (above) is also in Nashville [25][4].
Marriage licenses
- License taxes and fees (statewide): the Tennessee Department of Revenue lists a $15 and a $5 state privilege tax, a local option tax of up to $5, and a $62.50 additional state fee. $60 of that fee is waived if you complete an approved premarital course, or if you are out-of-state residents [29]. County clerks' totals also include their own fees, so check the county's price below.
- Marriage certificate copies (statewide): $15.00 from TDH Vital Records [5].
- Davidson County Clerk: $99.50 in cash or $101.49 by card. Checks aren't accepted. Submitting a notarized premarital counseling Certificate of Completion when you apply saves $60 [7]; by our arithmetic that's $39.50 in cash. The page doesn't list the reduced card price. The course is four hours, taken together or separately within one year before you apply. The clerk accepts only the Certificate of Completion form developed by the Administrative Office of the Courts, and it must be notarized [30].
- Out-of-state couples (two sources differ): the Department of Revenue says the $60 is also waived for out-of-state residents (statewide) [29]. The Davidson County Clerk's page mentions only the premarital course [7]. If you live outside Tennessee, call the Marriage and Notary Department at 615-862-6256 to confirm [7].
- Where and how: only the main office in the Howard Office Building issues licenses: 700 President Ronald Reagan Way, Suite 101, Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. [7][31]. Both of you must be there, and you fill out the application online first. The license is valid for 30 days. The office doesn't perform civil ceremonies [7]. The line may close before the posted hours, so arrive early [32].
- Upcoming closures: the County Clerk lists Wednesday, Nov 11 (Veterans Day) and Thursday–Friday, Nov 26–27 (Thanksgiving) as holidays [32]. Its branch offices handle only motor vehicle transactions [32].
- Copies of a Davidson County marriage license: licenses from the last 30 years can be printed at the County Clerk's office. By mail, $5.00 a copy plus a $2.00 mail fee, by check or money order payable to the Davidson County Clerk's Office [33]. For Davidson County marriages from 1779 to 2012 the clerk points to Metro Archives, and for Tennessee marriages in the last 50 years to Tennessee Vital Records [33].
Recorded documents (deeds and other land records)
- Davidson County Register of Deeds: 300 Deaderick St., 615-862-6790, Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. [34]. Most documents, including deeds and deeds of trust, are $5 a page with a $10 minimum, plus a $2 data processing fee. A release of one lien is $10 for one or two pages, plus the $2 fee [34]. State tax on a conveyance is $3.70 per $1,000 [34].
- Copies: $0.50 a page, or $1 a page certified, in person or by mail; mailed copies have a $2 minimum. In person it takes cash, checks, credit cards or money orders [35].
Court records
- Circuit Court Clerk: regular copies are $0.50 a page; certified copies are a $5.00 certification fee plus $0.50 a page. 1 Public Square, Suite 302, (615) 862-5181, Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The same clerk's office runs the General Sessions Civil Division at 408 Second Ave. N., Suite 2110 [36].
- General Sessions Civil (same Circuit Court Clerk): its own fee table lists a certified copy at $5.00 plus 50¢ a page [37]. We didn't find a separate plain-copy price on that table.
- Chancery Court (Clerk & Master): regular copies are $.50 a page; certified copies are $5.00 for the seal plus $.50 a page. Its file room is at (615) 862-5710 ext. 71868 [38].
- Criminal court records: the Criminal Court Clerk takes copy requests for court records, including affidavits, judgments and dispositions, by email at crimclerkcopyrequest@jisnashville.gov, and says "applicable copy fees may apply." A preliminary hearing recording on CD is $10.00 per CD [39]. We didn't find per-page or certified copy prices. We couldn't reach the General Sessions Court Clerk's site on Oct 31, 2026, so we didn't find its criminal copy prices.
Apostilles (statewide)
- Fee (statewide): $2.00 for each apostille or authentication from the Tennessee Secretary of State [40].
- Steps (statewide): get the document notarized by a Tennessee notary, then have the County Clerk of the county where that notary was commissioned certify the notary's signature, then send form SS-4504 [41]. Birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates signed by the Tennessee State Registrar don't need to be notarized first [40].
- Where (statewide): by mail to the Office of Authentications, Tennessee Secretary of State, Business Services Division, ATTN: ATS Section, 312 Rosa L. Parks Ave., 6th Floor, Nashville, TN 37243. For FedEx or UPS return, enclose a prepaid label with your name as sender and recipient, or documents come back by regular mail. In person at the 3rd floor customer service desk, Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Central; arrive by 2 p.m. for same-day service [41]. Phone (615) 741-0536 [40].
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
