Banks we left out: we didn't find an official Citi, Truist, Capital One or KeyBank page describing branch notary service as of Oct 27, 2026. That doesn't mean they don't offer it. If you bank with one of them, call your branch.
Is a bank notary free if I'm not a customer?
Usually you can't count on it. Bank of America, TD Bank, PNC and Regions all describe the service in terms of their own customers [1][7][8][9]. TD Bank is the one bank in our table that says it serves non-customers, in Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina and South Carolina, "as required by law" [8]. The other banks don't say. If you don't have a bank account, a public library may be a better bet (see below).
Do credit unions notarize for free?
Many credit unions offer notary service to members, with their own rules. One example is Navy Federal Credit Union [10]:
- Navy Federal documents: no charge.
- Other documents: first 2 per week at no charge, then $5.00 per document, "not to exceed the local jurisdiction fee maximum."
- Where: not offered in Louisiana. In California, Navy Federal documents only.
- Won't notarize: wills, advance directives, I-9 forms or vital records.
This is one example. Other credit unions set their own policies, so check yours.
Can I get something notarized for free at the library?
Some public libraries offer free notary service. Policies vary widely. Two examples:
- Ann Arbor District Library (MI): free to the public by appointment only, and no library card is needed. Appointments are at the Downtown Library, Monday through Friday, 10am to 5:30pm, with no weekend or same-day bookings [11].
- Columbus Metropolitan Library (OH): free basic notary service by appointment at all locations [12]. It won't notarize real estate documents such as mortgage closing documents, deeds, wills, living wills, trusts, powers of attorney, "true copy" certifications or Form I-9 [12].
These are examples. Search your own library system's website for "notary," or call your branch.
Does AAA notarize for free?
Some AAA clubs offer free notary service to members. AAA is organized into regional clubs, so check yours. One example is AAA Hoosier: "Free notary service is available to members at our AAA Hoosier service center locations for most documents." Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and your AAA membership card, and "Please make an appointment" [13].

Tips before you go
- Call or book first. Bank of America, PNC, Regions, the two libraries and AAA Hoosier all point you to an appointment or a call [1][7][9][11][12][13].
- Don't sign early. Bank of America and Wells Fargo say to wait to sign until you're with the notary [1][5].
- Bring everyone and every page. All signers must be present with ID, and banks ask for the complete document, not just the signature page [1][5][6][7][8].
- Ask about your document type. Navy Federal and Columbus Metropolitan Library list documents they won't notarize, such as wills [10][12]. See also common reasons a notary says no.
- Need a copy or a scan afterward? See where to scan documents and how much it costs to print.
