Jackson, Mississippi document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, fax, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in Jackson, Mississippi, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
Jackson/Hinds Library System (JHLS)
- Printing: 20¢ a page black and white and 50¢ a page color from the public computers; you collect and pay for prints at the circulation desk [1]. JHLS says you can print for free from your own laptop over the library's wireless connection [9].
- Copying: 20¢ a page black and white and 50¢ color on the self-service copiers. The coin box next to the copier takes $1.00 and $5.00 bills and gives change [1].
- Fax: free. Staff send it for you, with a free cover sheet and confirmation of delivery [1]. We didn't find whether that covers international faxes or whether the library receives faxes.
- Scanning: we didn't find a scanning price or details on the JHLS pages we checked.
- Branches in Jackson: Margaret Walker Alexander, 2525 Robinson St., 601-354-8911, Monday–Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday–Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Medgar Evers, 4215 Medgar Evers Blvd., 601-982-2867, same hours; Willie Morris, 4912 Old Canton Rd., 601-987-8181, Monday–Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday–Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Bolden/Moore, 1444 Wiggins Rd., 601-922-6076, Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Fannie Lou Hamer, 3450 Albermarle Rd., 601-362-3012, Monday–Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bolden/Moore and Fannie Lou Hamer close from noon to 1 p.m., and all five are closed Sunday [10]. The Census Geocoder places all but Medgar Evers inside Jackson city; it didn't match the Medgar Evers address [3].
- Past closure (Feb 21, 2024): the Eudora Welty Library at 300 N. State St. closed and moved out on February 21, 2024; JHLS said it was planning a temporary downtown location [11]. We didn't find whether that location has opened, so don't go to 300 N. State St.
- The UPS Store: it lists 1 location in Jackson: 1220 E. Northside Dr., Ste. 170, (769) 257-5761. Its city page says its stores offer packing, shipping, printing, shredding, notarizing, faxing and mailbox services [12]. We didn't find prices on the store pages; The UPS Store's site says products, services, prices and hours may vary by location [13]. The Census Geocoder places the store in Jackson city in Hinds County [12][3].

Notary in and near Jackson
- Jackson/Hinds Library System: we didn't find a notary service on the JHLS pages we checked.
- Rankin County Circuit Clerk (Brandon): lists "Notary (Free service to our community)" [14]. Rankin County's site gives its address as 211 E. Government St., Brandon, (601) 825-1475 [15]. That's in Brandon, not Jackson. We didn't find hours for the notary service or a residency rule.
- Rankin County Chancery Clerk (Brandon): the State Department's locator data lists photocopy and notary services at this passport office, 211 East Government St., Ste. D, Brandon [2]. We didn't find a notary price for it.
- The UPS Store: its Jackson page lists notarizing [12].
- Fees (statewide law): Mississippi law says a notarial officer may charge up to $5.00 for services [16]. The Secretary of State's notary rules set the same $5.00 maximum per signature for acknowledgments, jurats and signature witnessings, and say "A notary public need not charge for notarial acts." A notary may add a travel fee under set conditions, an employer may bar fees on work time, and the fee is waived for an absentee voter application or ballot [17]. Ask for the price before the notary starts.
- Proposed change (not in effect as far as we found): a proposed-rule filing on the Secretary of State's site would raise the maximum to $10.00 for most notarial acts ($5.00 for certifying an electronic document) and allow up to $25.00 for an electronic notarization [18]. We didn't find that it has been adopted; the current rules above still list $5.00 [17]. Confirm with the notary or the Secretary of State's Notary Division, 601-359-1615 [19].
Passports in Jackson
The U.S. Department of State's Passport Acceptance Facility Locator data lists 2 facilities in Jackson. The Census Geocoder places both inside Jackson city in Hinds County [2][3]:
| Facility | Address and phone | Passport hours (locator) | Photos |
|---|---|---|---|
| City of Jackson, Department of Municipal Clerk (City Hall) | 219 S. President St., Jackson, MS 39201. 601-960-2381 | Mon–Wed and Fri 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; Thu 8 a.m.–6 p.m. | Listed as on site |
| Jackson Post Office (USPS) | 401 E. South St., Jackson, MS 39201. 601-351-7096 | Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m.; Sat 9–11 a.m. | Listed as on site |
- City of Jackson Municipal Clerk: no appointment needed [20]; the locator adds that the office doesn't usually schedule appointments but will if asked [2]. Applications are available at the office in City Hall; don't sign yours until you're there. Phone (601) 960-2381 or email cityclerk@jacksonms.gov [20].
- Thursday hours (two sources differ): the city's page lists Monday–Wednesday and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. [20]. The State Department's locator data lists Thursday until 6 p.m. [2]. Call before a late Thursday visit.
- City of Jackson fees and payment: photos taken while you wait are an extra $10.00, and copies the passport agent makes for you are $0.50 a page. Bring copies of your ID (front and back on one page) and of your citizenship document. The acceptance fee can be paid by cash, check or money order payable to the City of Jackson. The application fee itself must be a check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State [20].
- Post office: the locator says to book passport appointments, or see more passport times, at usps.com/scheduler [2].
- Nearby, outside Jackson: the locator data also lists the Ridgeland Post Office, 611 S. Pear Orchard Rd.; the Rankin County Chancery Clerk, 211 East Government St., Ste. D, Brandon; and the Madison County Chancery Clerk, 146 W. Center St., Canton [2]. We didn't run those addresses through the Census Geocoder.
- Post office fees (national): a $35.00 acceptance fee and a $15.00 photo fee "if needed" [21].
- Faster return delivery (national): two official pages list different prices. USPS lists "$22.05—1- to 3- day delivery service for faster return shipping to you from the State Department" [21]. The State Department's fee page lists 1–3 business day return delivery at $26.87, for passport books only [22]. We couldn't re-read the State Department page on Oct 31, 2026, because it blocked our check. Confirm the fee with the acceptance facility before you pay.

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth, death and marriage certificates (statewide)
- Who issues them (statewide): in Mississippi, certified birth and death certificates come from the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Vital Records office, not from a county office. MSDH's rules make the state the sole registration district [23]. MSDH holds birth and death records from November 1912 on [24].
- Fees (statewide): birth, death and marriage certificates are $17; additional copies of the same record ordered at the same time are $6 [4][24]. By state law, $1.00 of each certified copy fee goes to the Children's Trust Fund. If no birth record is found, MSDH issues a Not-On-File certification and still charges the fee [25].
- In person (statewide office): 222 Marketridge Drive, Ridgeland, Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed state holidays [4][26]. MSDH says you get a birth certificate the same day unless a search is needed; death and marriage copies are mailed within 7–10 business days [4]. MSDH's birth certificate page says to bring photo ID [25].
- Paying in person (MSDH pages differ): MSDH's Q&A says it takes cash, a bank or post office money order, a cashier's check or a credit card in person, and that personal checks aren't accepted [4]. Its death and marriage record pages say you may pay by "cash, check, money order, or credit card/debit card" [26][27]. Bring something other than a personal check, or call MSDH at 601‑206‑8200 to confirm [24].
- By mail (statewide): Mississippi Vital Records, P.O. Box 1700, Jackson, MS 39215-1700, with a bank cashier's check or a bank or postal money order payable to Mississippi Vital Records, plus a copy of photo ID; no cash or personal checks [25].
- By phone or online (statewide): through a private service (VitalChek) by credit card, for an extra fee [24][4]. MSDH lists two numbers: its birth certificate page says to call 601‑206‑8200 [24], and its Q&A says 1-877-295-4229 [4].
- For a passport (statewide): MSDH says its certificates are long-form, have a raised seal and can be used to get a passport; it no longer issues short-form birth certificates [4].
- Divorce (statewide): MSDH doesn't keep divorce records. It offers a $17 five-year divorce index search to find the county; the certified decree comes from that county's Chancery Clerk [4].
- Hinds County: its FAQ sends people who want a birth, death or marriage certificate to the State Department of Health [6]. The MSDH Vital Records office is in Ridgeland, not Jackson; mail orders go to a Jackson P.O. box (statewide office) [4][25].
Marriage licenses
- Marriage record copies (statewide): MSDH has marriage records for January 1, 1926 to June 30, 1938, and January 1, 1942 to the present; it says not every marriage is on file, and otherwise to contact the Circuit Clerk in the county of issue [27]. For July 1938 through December 1941, only the Circuit Clerk in the county that issued the license has the record [4].
- Hinds County Circuit Clerk: we didn't find the marriage license fee or hours on an official Hinds County page; the county's main site showed only a "Website Coming Soon" placeholder when we checked on Oct 31, 2026 [7][8]. Call the Circuit Clerk before you go.
- Rankin County Circuit Clerk (Brandon), payment (two county pages differ): the license costs $37.00 on both pages. The Circuit Clerk page says $37.00 cash or $38.50 by credit card [14]; the county's Marriage License service page says "$37.00 – CASH ONLY," exact amount preferred [15]. Bring cash to be safe, or call the county at (601) 825-1475 [15]. Both people must come together, no appointment is needed, and you should arrive by 4:30 p.m. [14].
- Madison County: we didn't find the fee on an official Madison County page. On Oct 31, 2026 the county's site showed only a "Website Outage Notice": it says county email and phone systems still work, gives the Board of Supervisors at 601-855-5500, and links only to the Land Records Search [28][29]. The notice also says Madison County offices will be closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day [28]. Call the Circuit Clerk before you go.
Recorded documents (deeds and other land records)
- Statewide schedule: the Mississippi Real Property Recording Fees schedule, set by Miss. Code Ann. § 25-7-9 and effective January 1, 2020, lists $26.00 to record a deed or similar document of up to five pages in counties that collect the $1.00 archive fee, and $1.00 for each page after five. Copies are $0.50 a page made by the clerk or $0.25 a page if you make them yourself, and $1.00 to certify a complete document [30]. That schedule, posted by the Harrison County Chancery Clerk and provided by the Mississippi Chancery Clerk's Association, lists Hinds, Madison and Rankin among the archive-fee counties [30].
- Hinds County Chancery Clerk: we didn't find its own fee page. The county's "Map to our Office" link points to 316 S. President St., Jackson [8]. Its land-record indexes are online through the county's database page [8]. Confirm fees with the Chancery Clerk before you record.
- Court records: we didn't find Hinds County Circuit Clerk or Chancery Clerk copy fees for court records on an official page.
Apostilles (statewide)
- Fee and rules (statewide): the Mississippi Secretary of State charges $5.00 a document. The document must be notarized by a Mississippi notary or signed by a Mississippi public official; send originals, with a check or money order payable to Secretary of State [19]. The Secretary of State also says a notary who doesn't work for the issuing agency may not certify a copy of a government document such as a birth certificate [19].
- Where to send it (statewide): by mail to Secretary of State, P.O. Box 136, Jackson, MS 39205-0136, Attention: Notary / Apostille / Authentication, with Form 11 [31]. For FedEx or UPS the street address is 660 North Street, Jackson, MS 39202; include a prepaid return envelope, or documents come back by regular mail [19]. Questions: Notary Division, 601-359-1615 [19]. We didn't find walk-in hours or a processing time on that page.
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
Money orders
USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [32]. Other sellers: money order guide.
Shredding
- Free events: we didn't find an upcoming official free shred day in Jackson.
- The UPS Store: its Jackson page lists shredding [12]. We didn't find prices.
For paid per-pound shredding, see where to shred documents.
