- Becoming a notary in Fayette County: apply to the Secretary of State ($10). If you're approved, you have 30 days to come to the County Clerk's office to post a $1,000 surety bond and be sworn in. The Clerk charges $19 under KRS 64.012. Room 132, 162 E. Main St., (859) 253-3344 [1].
- How notaries are commissioned (statewide): in Kentucky you apply to the Secretary of State; the application fee is $10 [13][14]. You must live, work or practice in the county where you apply. Within 30 days of receiving the commission, you appear in person before that county clerk to take the oath, file a $1,000 surety bond and file the commission, and you pay the clerk's filing fees. A term is four years [15].
- Fees (statewide law): under KRS 423.430, a notary may charge a fee that has been "clearly disclosed to the person requesting the service in advance," in line with KRS 64.300 [14]. We didn't find a fixed maximum in the statute, so ask for the price before the notary starts.
