New Orleans, Louisiana document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, fax, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in New Orleans, Louisiana, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
New Orleans Public Library (NOPL)
- Printing and copies: available at all locations: $0.15 a page in black and white and $0.75 a page in color. Double-sided pages are charged per side, so a double-sided black-and-white page is $0.30 [1].
- Wireless printing: print from a phone, tablet or computer at any location through Princh, on its website or by email, and pay at the self-service kiosk or the circulation desk. Prices are the same [9].
- Fax: available at all locations for $0.50 a page, local or long distance. Outgoing only; the library can't receive faxes [2].
- Scanning: we didn't find scanning details on the NOPL pages we checked. Call the branch.
- Main Library: 219 Loyola Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70112 [10]. Hours: Monday–Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday–Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sunday. Other locations are open until 7 p.m. Monday–Thursday [11].
- Closed branches: the library's home page says "Algiers Regional, Keller, Latter, and Nora Navra Libraries are closed." Check before you go [12].
- The UPS Store: it lists 4 locations in New Orleans: 123 Baronne St, (504) 335-3114; 7041 Canal Blvd, (504) 381-4053; 6221 S Claiborne Ave, Ste. B, (504) 866-8664; and 900 Convention Center Blvd, (504) 670-8941. Its city page says they offer packing, shipping, printing, shredding, notarizing, faxing and mailbox services [13]. We didn't find prices on the store pages; The UPS Store's site says products, services, prices and hours may vary by location [14].
- Where the UPS stores are: the Census Geocoder places all four inside New Orleans city [15].

Notary in New Orleans
- Library (free, by appointment): NOPL offers free notary service by appointment only at several locations, staffed by volunteer notaries. Book through the library's Notary Public Services listings or contact the library. Bring your completed documents unsigned (the notary must witness every signature), photo ID for everyone signing and any witnesses you need. The limit is 3 documents per person per visit; the service isn't for commercial businesses, and you don't need a library card [3].
- The UPS Store: its New Orleans page lists notarizing [13].
- Fees (statewide): the Louisiana Secretary of State says Louisiana "does not have a statutory fee schedule which would determine or limit what a notary can charge for his services." Ask for the price before the notary starts [16].
- How Louisiana notaries differ (statewide): the Secretary of State says a Louisiana notary's signature is his seal, notaries are commissioned for life, and each is commissioned in the parish where they live; reciprocal parish groups set by law let a notary work in neighboring parishes. Attorney-notaries have statewide notarial powers. Its Notary Database lists contact information for all notaries [16].

- Post offices: the locator says to schedule a passport appointment or check other acceptance times at usps.com [4].
- Library and clerk: we didn't find a library or Clerk of Court in the locator data for New Orleans [4].
- Post office fees (national): a $35.00 acceptance fee and a $15.00 photo fee "if needed" [17].
- Faster return delivery (national): two official pages list different prices. USPS lists "$22.05—1- to 3- day delivery service for faster return shipping to you from the State Department" [17]. The State Department's fee page lists 1–3 business day return delivery at $26.87, for passport books only [18]. We couldn't re-read the State Department page on Oct 31, 2026, because it blocked our check. Confirm the fee with the acceptance facility before you pay.

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth and death records: Louisiana Department of Health (statewide)
- Fees (statewide): from the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) Vital Records, a long-form birth certificate is $15.00, a birth certificate plus short-form birth card is $24.00 a pair, and a death certificate is $7.00 a copy. Bought at a participating Clerk of Court instead, a long-form birth certificate is $34.00, a death certificate $26.00 and the birth card plus long-form pair $48.00. Mail-in and VitalChek orders add a $0.50 state charge, and VitalChek internet, phone and kiosk orders add a security fee. If no record is found, state law has LDH keep the fee for the search [5]. LDH's FAQ lists the short-form birth card alone at $9.00 and says some agencies may not accept it [19].
- Closed records (statewide): Louisiana birth and death certificates aren't public records. Requests need proper ID, the fee and an application, and only the person named, close family or their attorney can order a birth certificate [6].
- Walk-in (statewide office): the Vital Records Central Office, 1450 Poydras St., Suite 400, New Orleans, LA 70112, is open for walk-in service 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding state holidays. Bring photo ID; walk-in payment is cash (exact amount), check or money order [6]. Customer service: 504-593-5100 [20].
- Clerks of Court: participating Clerks of Court sell certified birth copies (long and short form), and death certificates for deaths on or after July 7, 2012, for an added fee [6][21].
- Mail and online: mail the application, a copy of photo ID and the fee to Vital Records Registry, PO Box 60630, New Orleans, LA 70160, and allow about 8–10 weeks. Internet, phone and fax orders go through VitalChek (1-877-605-8562), which charges extra [6].
- Marriage and divorce records (statewide): LDH keeps only Orleans Parish marriage records; for a divorce decree, contact the Clerk of Court in the parish where the divorce was granted [22].
- In New Orleans: the statewide Vital Records Central Office at 1450 Poydras St. is downtown; the Census Geocoder places it inside New Orleans city [6][15]. We didn't find Orleans Parish on LDH's list of Clerk of Court birth certificate locations [23].
Marriage licenses: Louisiana Department of Health (Orleans Parish only)
- Who issues them: in Orleans Parish, the Orleans Parish Marriage License Office of the Louisiana Department of Health issues licenses, not the Clerk of Court [7].
- Where: Benson Tower, 1450 Poydras Street, Suite 407. Licenses are issued 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday–Friday, except state holidays, and are valid in any Louisiana parish [7].
- Who must come: both parties should be present with all documents. An absent party's signature on the application must be separately notarized; for an absent member of the U.S. armed forces, a copy of a military ID can stand in, but at least one party must sign in person [7].
- What to bring: a current driver's license, state ID or passport; a certified birth certificate or certified birth card for both parties (translated if not in English); Social Security numbers if born in the U.S. (otherwise a passport or visa with I-94); and, if it applies, a certified copy of the final divorce decree or of the former spouse's death certificate [7].
- Fee: $27.50, non-refundable, by cash (exact amount), check, money order or credit/debit card, plus $5 for each certified copy of the marriage certificate [7][24]. The Rev 7/24 requirements sheet adds a $.50 mailing charge per transaction for certified copies [24].
- Conflicting sheet: LDH's page also links an older requirements sheet (Rev 8/18) that says credit and debit cards aren't accepted and that Orleans licenses can also be bought at the Second City Court in the Historic Algiers Courthouse, 225 Morgan Street. The current page doesn't mention Algiers. Confirm with the office [25][7].
- Waiting period and timing: state law requires 24 hours between issuance and the ceremony. First or Second City Court judges can waive it for Louisiana residents, Monday–Friday only; if both parties live outside Louisiana and a registered Orleans officiant performs the ceremony in Orleans Parish, the officiant can waive it. The license expires at midnight 30 days after issuance [7].
- Age: marriage under 16 is prohibited. Applicants who are 16 or 17 need judicial authorization and written consent of a parent, tutor or legal guardian [7].
Recorded documents: Clerk of Civil District Court, Land Records Division
- Where: 1340 Poydras Street, 4th Floor, New Orleans, LA 70112; (504) 407-0005. Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. [26][27].
- Hours change: the clerk says that starting November 9, 2026 (upcoming), its regular business hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., citing La. R.S. 13:756 [28]. We couldn't re-check the clerk's website on Oct 31, 2026, because it showed a security certificate error, so confirm the hours with the office.
- Recording fees: $100 for 1–5 pages, $200 for 6–25 pages, $300 for 26–50 pages, and $300 plus $5 per page over 50. These tiers come from state law (La. R.S. 13:844), and they include one certified copy of the recorded document and indexing of up to ten names. The Orleans clerk adds a $30.00 uniform building fund fee and a $5.00 Louisiana Clerks' Remote Access Authority (LCRAA) portal fee per recording [29].
- Copies: $1.00 a page. A certified copy is $10.00 plus $1.00 a page under the fee schedule (updated 8-21-2026), and a file-stamped conformed copy ($5.00) is only available at recording [29].
- Conflicting price: the clerk's Land Records Fees web page says recorded documents "can be certified for the cost of $30.00 per document, in addition to the cost of copies, per page." That doesn't match the $10.00 on the fee schedule. Confirm with the office [27][29].
- Margins: the first sheet needs at least a 2-inch top margin, and all sheets need 1-inch margins at the bottom and sides; documents without them are rejected or charged $20.00 per act [27].
Court copies: Clerk of Civil District Court, Civil Division
- Where: 421 Loyola Avenue, Room 402, New Orleans, LA 70112; (504) 407-0000. Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. [26]. For a divorce decree, LDH says to contact the Clerk of Court in the parish where the divorce was granted [22].
- Copy fees: certified copies are $3.00 a page and uncertified copies $1.00 a page; a certification under the "act of congress" is $12.00 [30].
Apostilles (statewide)
- Fee: the Louisiana Secretary of State charges $20 per document, or $10 per document if it's related to an adoption [31]. Its request form adds a $5.00 state fee for credit card users and says to allow two to three business days for processing [32].
- Where: Commissions Division, 8585 Archives Ave., Baton Rouge, LA 70809. Walk-in service is Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except state holidays and closures; questions 225.922.0330. By USPS mail: P.O. Box 94125, Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9125. Include a written request naming the country, a daytime phone number and a prepaid return envelope or label [31].
- Which copy: send the original document. Documents issued by Clerks of Court and Louisiana Vital Records don't need notarizing, and photocopies of them aren't accepted. Other documents must be notarized by a Louisiana notary, with the notary's printed name and ID number beneath the signature [31].
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
Money orders
USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [33]. Other sellers: money order guide.
Shredding
- City Shred Day (free, upcoming): the City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation lists December 19, 2026 as its next Shred Day. Residents can shred personal or sensitive paper, up to 50 pounds per person [34]. We didn't find the time and place for the December event; the September 19, 2026 event (past) ran 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Recycling Drop-Off Center, 2829 Elysian Fields Avenue, for Orleans Parish residents [35].
- Past events: the 2026 Shred Days on March 21, June 20 and September 19 are past [34].
- The UPS Store: its New Orleans page lists shredding [13]. We didn't find prices.
For paid per-pound shredding, see where to shred documents.
