Watertown, South Dakota document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, fax, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in Watertown, South Dakota, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
Watertown Regional Library
- Printing and copying: "Printing, scanning, copying and faxing are all available at the library." Printing is $0.15 per black-and-white page and $0.25 per color page [1]. We didn't find a separate copy price.
- Scanning: free to email, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or USB [1].
- Fax: the library lists "To Fax: $2.00" [1]. We didn't find whether that's per page or per fax, or whether receiving a fax is offered.
- Print from your device: upload documents to the library's printing kiosk through the link on the FAQ page. You don't need a library card; type your initials or first name as the username [1].
- Location and hours: 160 6th St NE, Watertown, SD 57201, 605-882-6220. Mon–Thu 9:30 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun 1–5 p.m. [2]. The library lists 2026 federal holiday closures on its FAQ page [1].
- Library cards: bring a photo ID and proof of address. Cards for people living outside Codington County cost a fee; the 2026 out-of-county fee is $56.00 a year for a family card and $44.00 for a senior (55+) card, with 6-month and 3-month options [1][6].
The UPS Store
The UPS Store #4963 at 708 9th Ave SE, (605) 886-9700, lists printing, copies and documents, faxing and scanning, notary and shredding. Its page lists hours of Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–6:30 p.m., Sat 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and Sun 10 a.m.–3 p.m. [19]. We didn't find prices on the store page.
See printing prices and fax prices.
Notary in Watertown
- Library: "The library does not have a notary." Its FAQ lists these places around Watertown instead [1]:
- Watertown City Finance Office, 23 2nd St. NE, 605-882-6203: no charge
- First Interstate Bank, 35 1st Ave NE, 605-886-8401: no charge
- Meyer Insurance, 1933 Willow Creek Dr., 605-753-5698: no charge
- UPS, 605-886-9700: $10 per signature, $20 if you don't bring a witness
- The UPS Store: the store's own page lists notary service [19], but we didn't find its notary prices or hours there. The library FAQ gives its address as 711 9th Ave. SE; the store's page says 708 9th Ave SE [1][19].
- Fees (statewide): South Dakota law says a notary "may charge and receive a fee for each instrument notarized," except that no notary may charge a fee for notarizing a request for an absentee ballot [12][14]. A 2025 law (House Bill 1192, signed March 12, 2025) removed the old cap of ten dollars [13]. So there's no state dollar maximum, as in Kansas. Nebraska's acknowledgment cap is $5, and Wyoming's and Arizona's caps are $10 per notarial act.
- Where notaries can act (statewide): South Dakota notaries can notarize only within South Dakota [15]. Remote online notarization has been allowed since a 2024 law, but the notary must be physically in South Dakota; the signer can be anywhere [15].
- ID (statewide): the Secretary of State lists government-issued photo IDs such as a U.S. passport, a driver's license or state ID card, a tribal ID or a U.S. Armed Forces ID card [15].
- Find a notary (statewide): the Secretary of State's Notary Public Search lists active notaries and e-notaries [15].

The U.S. Department of State's Passport Acceptance Facility Locator data lists one Watertown facility, the post office [3]:

- Appointments: the locator says to schedule a passport appointment or view more acceptance times at usps.com/scheduler [3].
- Post office fees (national): a $35.00 acceptance fee and a $15.00 photo fee "if needed" [4].
- Faster service (national): the State Department's 1–3 business day return delivery is $26.87, for passport books only [5].
- Photos elsewhere: the Watertown UPS Store page doesn't list passport photos [19].

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth, death and marriage certificates: Codington County Register of Deeds
- Where: 14 1st Ave. SE, Watertown, SD 57201. Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Phone (605) 882-6278 [7]. The Department of Health's list of offices gives the same address [11].
- By mail: download the Vital Record Request form from the Register of Deeds page ("Forms & Documents") and mail it with the fee to Register of Deeds, 14 1st Ave SE, Watertown, SD 57201 [7][8].
- Fee: the county page lists $15.00 for a certified copy of a marriage license after filing [7]. We didn't find the birth or death certificate fee on the county page. The state Vital Records Office charges $15 per certificate (statewide) [9].
- Who can order (statewide): South Dakota vital records aren't open for public inspection. Eligible people include the person named, a spouse, child, parent, guardian or next of kin, with a government-issued photo ID or, without one, copies of two other documents [9].
- State office (statewide): the Department of Health Vital Records Office, 221 W. Capitol Ave., Pierre, 605-773-4961, also charges $15 per certificate. Orders can be in person, by mail, online or by phone. Copies can't be faxed or emailed. VitalChek is the only authorized online vendor; its page lists a $6.50 VitalChek fee and a $5.00 expedite fee, plus $17.50 for optional UPS Next Day [9].
- Divorce (statewide): divorce certificates come only from the state office; divorce decrees come from the Clerk of Courts in the county where the divorce was filed [9].
Marriage licenses: Register of Deeds
- Fee: $40.00, cash only, no checks [7]. The amount is set by state law [10][22].
- ID and presence: both people must be present for the application, with photo ID such as a driver's license, state ID, military ID or tribal photo ID [7].
- Rules: no blood test and no waiting period: the license may be used the same day and must be used within 90 days. It may be used anywhere in South Dakota [7].
- Minimum age: the county lists 16 with parental consent and a birth certificate, and 18 without parental consent [7]. The Department of Health's statewide page says applicants 16 or 17 need a circuit court order or written, notarized consent from two parents or a legal guardian [10].
- Any county (statewide): you can get a license from any South Dakota Register of Deeds. You can submit the application online first through the state Vital Records Services Portal [10].
Recorded documents: Codington County Register of Deeds
- Copies: a copy of your deed is $1.00 per page. Certified copies are $5.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each additional page [7]. The county warns about letters from "Records Transfer Service" offering a deed copy for $83.00 [7].
- Recording: documents must comply with the document standards law (SDCL 43-28-23) [7]. The county's linked fee schedule is a 2013 scan, so we didn't use it. State law (statewide) sets the recording fee at $30 for the first 50 pages [18].
Court records: Clerk of Courts
- Codington County: 14 1st Ave SE, Watertown, SD 57201. Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Phone 605-882-5095. Codington County is part of the Third Judicial Circuit [16].
- Fees (statewide): the court system's schedule lists certified copies and authenticated copies at $2.00 each and record searches at $20.00 per name. Copy fees depend on the type of copy and the number of pages [17]. We didn't find a per-page price for plain copies. The court system's records-request page says, "Copying and certification fees shall be charged as determined by statute or Supreme Court Rule," and we didn't find a published per-page amount there either. Its online record search (PARS) charges $20 for each search, charged even if the search finds no records [23].
Apostilles (statewide)
The South Dakota Secretary of State in Pierre charges $25.00 per document. Mailed requests are processed within 2 business days of receipt. Expedited appointments add a $50 fee and are limited to 10 documents. Vital records for an apostille must be certified copies from a Register of Deeds or the Department of Health, not notarized copies [21]. See the apostille guide.
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
Money orders
USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [20]. Other sellers: money order guide.
Shredding
- Free events: we didn't find an upcoming free shred event on the official city and county pages we checked.
- The UPS Store: the Watertown store lists shredding [19]. We didn't find its price.
For paid per-pound shredding, see where to shred documents.
