Printing, copying, scanning and fax
K.O. Lee Aberdeen Public Library
- Printing: black-and-white printing from the library's desktop computers costs 10 cents per page, by cash or check only. Pick up and pay at the Information Desk. "Wireless printing is currently not available," and printing isn't available from the library's laptops [1].

- Location and hours: 215 4th Ave SE, Aberdeen, SD 57401, 605-626-7097. Mon–Thu 9 a.m.–8 p.m., Fri 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat 10 a.m.–3 p.m., Sun 1–4 p.m. Doors lock 15 minutes before closing. Notary in Aberdeen
- Library: we didn't find a notary service on the K.O. Lee Aberdeen Public Library pages we checked. That doesn't mean there isn't one, so call 605-626-7097 to ask [2].
- The UPS Store: the Aberdeen store lists notary service [20]. We didn't find its notary hours or prices.
- Fees (statewide): South Dakota law says a notary "may charge and receive a fee for each instrument notarized," except that no notary may charge a fee for notarizing a request for an absentee ballot [13][15]. A 2025 law (House Bill 1192, signed March 12, 2025) removed the old cap of ten dollars [14]. So there's no state dollar maximum, as in Kansas. Nebraska's acknowledgment cap is $5, and Wyoming's and Arizona's caps are $10 per notarial act.
- Where notaries can act (statewide): South Dakota notaries can notarize only within South Dakota [16]. Remote online notarization has been allowed since a 2024 law, but the notary must be physically in South Dakota; the signer can be anywhere [16].
- ID (statewide): the Secretary of State lists government-issued photo IDs such as a U.S. passport, a driver's license or state ID card, a tribal ID or a U.S. Armed Forces ID card [16].
- Find a notary (statewide): the Secretary of State's Notary Public Search lists active notaries and e-notaries [16].

- ID and mail orders: fill out an application and show a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, or two other listed documents, such as a Social Security card and a utility bill with your current address. By mail, include a photocopy of your ID, a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check or money order payable to the Brown County Register of Deeds [8].
- Who can order (statewide): South Dakota vital records aren't open for public inspection. Eligible people include the person named, a spouse, child, parent, guardian or next of kin, with a government-issued photo ID or, without one, copies of two other documents [10].
- State office (statewide): the Department of Health Vital Records Office, 221 W. Capitol Ave., Pierre, 605-773-4961, also charges $15 per certificate. Orders can be in person, by mail, online or by phone. Copies can't be faxed or emailed. VitalChek is the only authorized online vendor; its page lists a $6.50 VitalChek fee and a $5.00 expedite fee, plus $17.50 for optional UPS Next Day [10].
- Divorce (statewide): divorce certificates come only from the state office; divorce decrees come from the Clerk of Courts in the county where the divorce was filed [10].
Marriage licenses: Register of Deeds

- Rules: both people must be at the appointment to fill out and sign the application, each with government-issued ID such as a driver's license or passport. The license is valid for 90 days. It must be used in South Dakota, but it can be used in any county [8]. Brown County doesn't issue marriage licenses after 4:30 p.m. [8]. There's no blood test (statewide) [11].
- Applicants 16 or 17: Brown County says they need a parent or guardian's written consent, on a form available at its office [8]. The Department of Health's statewide page says a circuit court order or written, notarized consent from two parents or a legal guardian [11].

- Fees (statewide): the court system's schedule lists certified copies and authenticated copies at $2.00 each and record searches at $20.00 per name. Copy fees depend on the type of copy and the number of pages [18]. We didn't find a per-page price for plain copies. The court system's records-request page says, "Copying and certification fees shall be charged as determined by statute or Supreme Court Rule," and we didn't find a published per-page amount there either. Its online record search (PARS) charges $20 for each search, charged even if the search finds no records [24].
