Notary in Santa Fe
- County Clerk (limited): the Santa Fe County Clerk's Office offers complimentary notary service for documents and filings required for County Clerk business or submitted to the County Clerk. It doesn't provide notary blocks, and it points people to banks and parcel service centers for other notarizations [9][10]. Its recording page says staff will notarize your signature on a lien document at no charge if you bring proper ID [9].
- Library: we didn't find notary service on the Santa Fe Public Library's service pages [1][2][3].
- The UPS Store: the 223 N Guadalupe St store lists notary service [17]. We didn't find its notary price.
- Fees (statewide): the New Mexico Secretary of State's Notarial Officer Handbook (revised July 2023) says a notary "may charge up to" $5.00 per acknowledgment, $5.00 per person for an oath or affirmation without a signature, and $5.00 per jurat. Copy certifications are $.50 a page with a $5.00 minimum. A travel fee is allowed only if you agree to it in advance and are told it's separate and not required by law. Electronic notarizations may add a technology fee of no more than $25 per act. An employer can't set higher fees [13]. Nebraska's acknowledgment cap is also $5; Utah's is $10 per signature, Wyoming's $10 per notarial act and Colorado's $15 per document, and Kansas has no dollar cap.
- Spouses (statewide): a New Mexico notary may not notarize a record in which the notary or the notary's spouse or domestic partner is a party or has a direct beneficial interest [13]. We didn't find a broader rule on other relatives on the pages we checked.
- ID and journal (statewide): a notary may not act without identifying you as required by 14-14A-6 NMSA 1978, and must keep a journal that records the fee charged [13]. New Mexico's Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts has applied since January 1, 2022 [14].
- Banks (national policy): Bank of America says notary service is available "at no cost to our customers" and "in many of our financial centers." Schedule an appointment. All signers must be present [15]. We didn't check which Santa Fe branches offer it. For other banks, see free notary options.

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth and death certificates: NMDOH Vital Records
- Not the county: the Santa Fe County Clerk's Office says it can't give you a copy of a birth certificate or an official death certificate and refers you to the state [10]. The county's FAQ gives the Vital Records address as 1900 S. Saint Francis Drive; NMDOH's own pages list 2554 Camino Entrada, so use NMDOH's address [10][12].
- In person in Santa Fe: the Bureau of Vital Records & Health Statistics, 2554 Camino Entrada, Santa Fe, NM 87505, is open Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m.; call 505-827-0121. NMDOH lists it for birth certificates, and death certificates must be ordered through this Santa Fe office [12].
- Fees (statewide): the non-refundable search fee is $10 per certified birth certificate and $5 per certified death certificate, if the record is on file [12].
- Who can order (statewide): New Mexico birth and death certificates are restricted. Access is limited to the registrant, immediate family (mother, father, sibling, child, grandchild, current spouse or grandparent) or someone with proof of a legal interest [12].
- By mail: send the form or letter with a certified check or money order payable to "New Mexico Vital Records" in the exact amount to Post Office Box 26110, Santa Fe, NM 87502. Don't send cash [12].
- Online or by phone (VitalChek): NMDOH doesn't take credit cards or online orders itself, but you can order through VitalChek, online or at 877-284-0963. With 3–5 business day processing, regular mail delivery costs $26.00 for a birth certificate or $21.00 for a death certificate, and UPS Next Day Air costs $44.50 or $39.50 [12].
Marriage licenses: Santa Fe County Clerk
- Fee and ID: $55.00, due when the license is issued; cash, card or check. Both applicants must be present at the same time. Applicants 18 and over need a valid government-issued photo ID with name and date of birth, or a valid passport [8].
- Appointment: call (505) 986-6280 to be transferred to staff who can schedule you [8]. The clerk's office says walk-ins are welcome for in-person business, but recommends an appointment [7].
- Rules: no blood test and no waiting period. You don't have to live in Santa Fe County. The license doesn't expire, but it must be returned, in person or by mail, within 90 days of the ceremony to be recorded. Two witnesses over 18 must be at the ceremony [8].
- Copies: certified copies are $5.00 each, and anyone can request one of the records on file, in person or by mail with a check. The office certifies the marriage application, not the license itself [8].

More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
