Rapid City, South Dakota document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, fax, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in Rapid City, South Dakota, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
Rapid City Public Library
- Copies and prints: the fees policy lists "Photocopies & Prints" at $0.20 per printed side for letter or legal size and $0.40 per printed side for ledger size. Patron-provided paper is charged at the same rates [2]. We didn't find a separate color price on the pages we checked.
- Paying: cash or credit card at the print release stations. A credit card payment places a $10 hold, which is replaced with the actual charges within 48 hours [1].
- Fax: there's no cost to send a fax. Bring the document to scan at the library, or email the file to ask@rcplib.org with fax instructions. To receive a fax at the library, use 1 (605) 566-7176. Faxes not picked up within 5 days are deleted, and printing costs still apply [1].
- Scan: the library scans documents for faxing [1]. We didn't find a scan-to-email or scan-to-USB service or price on the pages we checked.
- Print from your device: use the Public Print Locations (ePRINTit) app, the ePRINTit website, or forward an email to tbs-rcpl-color@eprintitservice.com. Jobs stay in the queue for 24 hours and can be picked up at the library's drive-thru at 610 Quincy St [1].
- Computers: up to 4 hours per day with a library account or a computer access account [1].
- Downtown Library: 610 Quincy Street, Rapid City, SD 57701. Mon–Thu 9 a.m.–7 p.m., Fri–Sun 10 a.m.–6 p.m. [3]. Phone (605) 394-6139 [4].
The UPS Store
Two Rapid City stores list color and black-and-white printing and copying, mobile printing, fax (send and receive), notary, passport and ID photos and shredding: #1884 at 3213 W Main, (605) 342-7379, and #6710 at 1329 Eglin St, (605) 716-5231. Both pages list hours of Mon–Fri 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat 9 a.m.–3 p.m. and Sun 10 a.m.–3 p.m. [23][24]. We didn't find prices on the store pages.

Notary in Rapid City
- Library: "Notary services are available at no cost to library card holders during library hours. A $10 fee is charged for non-card holders." Each signer needs a valid photo ID. Stop by and ask a staff member [1]. The fees policy lists the notary fee as $10 per session for non-card holders and restricted accounts [2].
- Library cards: bring a photo ID and proof of current residential address. If you don't qualify for a resident card, a non-resident card is available [1]. The fees policy lists non-resident cards, for people living outside Pennington County, at $130 per card per year [2].
- The UPS Store: both Rapid City stores list notary service, with notary hours "Available 7 Days" [23][24]. We didn't find their notary prices.
- Fees (statewide): South Dakota law says a notary "may charge and receive a fee for each instrument notarized," except that no notary may charge a fee for notarizing a request for an absentee ballot [16][18]. A 2025 law (House Bill 1192, signed March 12, 2025) removed the old cap of ten dollars [17]. So there's no state dollar maximum, as in Kansas. Nebraska's acknowledgment cap is $5, and Wyoming's and Arizona's caps are $10 per notarial act.
- Where notaries can act (statewide): South Dakota notaries can notarize only within South Dakota [19]. Remote online notarization has been allowed since a 2024 law, but the notary must be physically in South Dakota; the signer can be anywhere [19].
- ID (statewide): the Secretary of State lists government-issued photo IDs such as a U.S. passport, a driver's license or state ID card, a tribal ID or a U.S. Armed Forces ID card [19].
- Find a notary (statewide): the Secretary of State's Notary Public Search lists active notaries and e-notaries [19].

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth, death and marriage certificates: Pennington County Register of Deeds
- Where: 900 Concourse Dr, Suite 110, Rapid City, SD 57703, 605-394-2177. Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–4 p.m., excluding holidays [9]. The Department of Health's list of offices gives the same address [15]. Its marriage requirements page still lists an older address, 130 Kansas City Street, Suite 210 [14], so we used the county's own page.
- Fee: $15.00 for each certified birth, death or marriage certificate. Birth certificates can be issued back to 1905 [10]. The county's fee summary lists $15 in cash or $17.50 by credit card [12].
- How to pay: no personal checks. In the office, cash is accepted. By mail, use a money order or cashier's check with the state application form. For credit card orders, the county sends people to VitalChek, with an additional $11.50 fee for expedited processing [10].
- Who can order (statewide): South Dakota vital records aren't open for public inspection. Eligible people include the person named, a spouse, child, parent, guardian or next of kin, with a government-issued photo ID or, without one, copies of two other documents [13].
- State office (statewide): the Department of Health Vital Records Office, 221 W. Capitol Ave., Pierre, 605-773-4961, also charges $15 per certificate. Orders can be in person, by mail, online or by phone. Copies can't be faxed or emailed. VitalChek is the only authorized online vendor; its page lists a $6.50 VitalChek fee and a $5.00 expedite fee, plus $17.50 for optional UPS Next Day [13].
- Divorce (statewide): divorce certificates come only from the state office; divorce decrees come from the Clerk of Courts in the county where the divorce was filed [13].
Marriage licenses: Register of Deeds
- Fee: $40, set by state law [14][27]. Pennington County takes $40 in cash, no checks, or $42.50 by credit card [11].
- Rules: both applicants must be present with a photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID, military ID or tribal photo ID. There's no waiting period, and the license is valid for 90 days and can be used anywhere in South Dakota [11]. There's no blood test (statewide) [14]. Pennington County says it has no Justices of the Peace to perform marriages [11].
- Applicants 16 or 17 (statewide): they need a circuit court order or written, notarized consent from two parents or a legal guardian [14].
- Any county (statewide): you can get a license from any South Dakota Register of Deeds. You can submit the application online first through the state Vital Records Services Portal [14].
Recorded documents: Pennington County Register of Deeds
- Recording: $30.00 for a deed, mortgage or miscellaneous document, plus $2.00 per page over 50 pages. Documents must meet the state format standards (SDCL 43-28-23) [12]. The $30 fee for the first 50 pages is set by state law [22].
- Copies: $1.00 a page. The certification fee is $5.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each page after that [12], matching state law [22].
Court records: Clerk of Courts
- Pennington County: 315 St Joseph St #5, Rapid City (mail to PO Box 230, Rapid City, SD 57709-0230). Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–4:55 p.m. Civil department 605-394-2575, criminal 605-394-2570, small claims and accounting 605-394-2688 [20].
- Fees (statewide): the court system's schedule lists certified copies and authenticated copies at $2.00 each and record searches at $20.00 per name. Copy fees depend on the type of copy and the number of pages [21]. We didn't find a per-page price for plain copies. The court system's records-request page says, "Copying and certification fees shall be charged as determined by statute or Supreme Court Rule," and we didn't find a published per-page amount there either. Its online record search (PARS) charges $20 for each search, charged even if the search finds no records [29].
Apostilles (statewide)
The South Dakota Secretary of State in Pierre charges $25.00 per document. Mailed requests are processed within 2 business days of receipt. Expedited appointments add a $50 fee and are limited to 10 documents. Vital records for an apostille must be certified copies from a Register of Deeds or the Department of Health, not notarized copies [26]. See the apostille guide.
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
Money orders
USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [25]. Other sellers: money order guide.
