Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth and death records (statewide rules)
- Who issues them (statewide): the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Division of Vital Records in Springfield issues birth and death certificates, and it says you may also contact the county clerk where the event occurred [8][16].
- IDPH birth certificate fees (statewide): $15 or $10 for the first certified copy, depending on the version, and $2 for each additional copy of the same certificate ordered at the same time. A genealogical copy is $10 [8][17], and a commemorative birth certificate is $40 [17].
- Which version costs what (IDPH pages differ): IDPH's birth certificate page says $15 gets the information collected at the time of birth, and $10 gets a set list of items (name, date and place of birth, parents' details, file date and state file number) [8]. IDPH's fee schedule calls the $15 version the long form, a full copy of the original record, and the $10 version the short form, a computer-generated abstract, but it places the item list beside the $15 version [17]. Ask IDPH or the county clerk which version you need before you order.
- IDPH death certificate fees (statewide): $19 for a full certified copy and $4 for each additional copy [16][17].
- IDPH by mail: Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Vital Records, 110 W Lawrence Ave., Springfield, IL 62704-2610; pay by check or money order payable to IDPH [8]. IDPH says mail requests take about 12 weeks from when it gets your paperwork. For urgent needs, it says to send the request by overnight delivery with proof of immediate need and a prepaid overnight return envelope; certified copies are then processed in 5 to 7 business days [16].
- IDPH online: through VitalChek, with a major credit card. On the death certificate page IDPH lists a $15.00 handling fee, plus $22.00 if you choose UPS delivery [16].
- Office move (past): IDPH's Springfield office at 925 East Ridgley Avenue closed, and the new office at 110 W Lawrence Avenue opened on September 14, 2026 [16].
DuPage County Clerk (events in DuPage County)
- Fees: birth and marriage certificates are $14.00 for the first certified copy and $2.00 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. Death certificates are $18.00, and $6.00 for each additional copy [5].
- In person: 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; fill out the request form before you go. The Clerk takes cash or check; cards add a 3.5% transaction fee [5]. Vital records phone: 630-407-5500 [18].
- By mail: DuPage County Clerk, P.O. Box 1028, Wheaton, IL 60187, with the request form, a photocopy of valid ID and a check or money order payable to the DuPage County Clerk. The Clerk can't take vital-record orders by phone, email or fax [5].
- Online: through VitalChek, which charges a $10.00 service fee [5].
- Who can order: the Clerk holds only DuPage County births and deaths. Death certificates go to direct relatives or people who can prove a financial interest [5].
- Free birth certificates: homeless people and others in qualifying circumstances born in DuPage County can ask for a free certified copy of their birth record, with verification by an agency [5].
Marriage licenses
- Marriage records (statewide): IDPH doesn't issue certified copies of marriage records; they come from the county clerk in the county where the marriage happened. IDPH can verify the facts of a marriage from 1962 on for $5 [19].
- When a license is valid (statewide law): Illinois law says a marriage license becomes effective in the county where it was issued one day after it is issued, unless a court orders otherwise, and expires 60 days after it becomes effective [20].
- DuPage County Clerk: the license is $35.00. The Clerk takes cash or check; cards add a 3.5% fee. Complete the online application first, then both of you appear together at 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, with the confirmation and valid government ID, Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. No appointment is needed, but licenses aren't issued after 4:00 p.m. [6].
- Timing: the license takes effect the day after it's issued and is valid for 60 days, only in DuPage County. Get it at least 1 day before the ceremony; the Clerk can't waive the wait. For a courthouse ceremony, register for the ceremony before you apply [6].
- Ceremony in the Will County part: a DuPage license can't be used in any other county [6], so couples marrying in the Will County part of Naperville should ask the Will County Clerk.
Recorded documents and court copies (DuPage County)
- DuPage County Recorder, recording: deeds, mortgages, easements, leases and miscellaneous documents are $86.00 each. Nonstandard documents are $112.00, and maps or plats are $110.00. Recording a DD-214 military discharge, and certified copies of it, is free [21].
- DuPage County Recorder, copies: $0.50 a page, plus $5.00 to certify a document. A $5.00 service fee per document applies to phone, email, fax and mailed requests [21].
- DuPage County Circuit Clerk: copies are $2.00 for page 1, $0.50 a page for pages 2–20 and $0.25 a page after that, plus $6.00 per document certification. The Clerk says the copy costs are the same online, in person or by mail; online orders go through i2File [22].
- Circuit Clerk fee schedule: a record search is $6.00, and the mailing fee is $10.00 plus postage. The schedule's header says fees took effect September 11, 2026 (past), while its page footer says "revised 05/07/2024" [23]. Confirm current fees with the Circuit Clerk.
Apostilles (statewide)
- Fee (statewide law): Illinois law sets the Secretary of State's fee for a certificate or apostille, with seal, at $2 [24].
- Rules (statewide law): requests go on the Secretary of State's form with the fee. The office may refuse a document that isn't an original, isn't properly certified or notarized, or is meant for use in the U.S. or in a country that isn't part of the Hague Convention [25].
- Where and how long: we couldn't read the Illinois Secretary of State's apostille pages on Oct 31, 2026; the site didn't respond to our checks. Confirm addresses, hours and processing times with the Secretary of State before you send documents.
