- County fees: the mail request forms list $15 for a full-size certified birth certificate ($17 in a plastic sleeve) and $20.00 for a certified death certificate ($22.00 in a plastic sleeve) [3][20]. The department's older fee chart lists the same $15.00 and $20.00 [21].
- State fees, side by side: the Indiana Department of Health lists $10.00 for a birth certificate and $8.00 for a death certificate (statewide) [4]. The county and the state list different prices; check with the office you order from.
- How to pay: credit and debit cards are taken at the walk-in office, with a $2.00 convenience fee up to $100.00 and 3% above that [19]. By mail, send a check or money order payable to Marion County Public Health Department; don't send cash [20][3]. VitalChek takes online orders for an extra fee [19].
- ID and eligibility: bring current, valid ID; expired or temporary IDs aren't accepted [19]. The department's fee chart says it has only Marion County, Indiana records [21], and its death certificate mail form is only for deaths in Marion County [20].
- Paternity: voluntary paternity establishment is by appointment and costs $35 for the amendment plus $15.00 for the new birth certificate [22].
Birth and death certificates (statewide)
- State fees (statewide): the Indiana Department of Health charges $10.00 for a birth certificate and $4.00 for each extra copy in the same order, and $8.00 for a death certificate and $4.00 for each extra copy. Fees aren't refunded and don't include third-party fees for online or phone orders [4]. Local health departments set their own fees; see the county fees above.
- In person (statewide): the state office has no walk-in service. To buy a certificate in person, go to the local health department in the county where the birth or death happened [4][23].
- By mail, online or by phone from the state (statewide): mail State Form 49607 (birth) or 49606 (death) with a check or money order payable to the Indiana Department of Health (no cash). Online orders go through VitalChek, and phone orders through (866) 601-0891, with third-party fees [4].
- Processing times (statewide): the state lists 2–3 weeks for a standard birth certificate, 6–8 weeks for a long-form birth certificate and 60 days for a death certificate [4]. Its home page says to allow 2 weeks for an order to reach the office and 10–15 business days to process it [23]. The long-form birth certificate is only available from the state [24].
- Who can order (statewide): you need a direct interest, a documented financial or legal interest, or a close family tie (parent, adult sibling or grandparent) to the person named on the record [24].
Marriage licenses (Marion County Clerk)
- Marriage licenses (statewide): in Indiana, the county clerk issues marriage licenses. Both of you apply in person at the clerk's office in an Indiana county where one of you lives; couples from out of state apply in the county where they will marry. The fee is $25.00 if one or both of you live in Indiana and $65.00 if neither does. Some offices add a $4.00 document fee, and each certified copy is $4.00. Most counties require cash. The license is valid for 60 days, and you can marry the same day. You'll need ID and your Social Security number [9].
- Copies (statewide): certified copies of marriage licenses come from the clerk of the county where the license was issued, not from the state health department [25].
- Marion County Clerk: apply online first, then come to the office for a walk-in review (no appointments) and pay the fee: $25 for Indiana residents and $65 for out-of-state residents, in cash or by credit or debit card with a processing charge. Hoosiers from other counties apply in their home county; out-of-state couples marrying in Marion County apply here. Both of you need physical, unexpired ID [5].
- After the wedding: the signed license must be filed with the Clerk's Office within 30 days of the ceremony [5].
- Copies: in person at the City-County Building, 200 E. Washington St., Suite W122, or the Community Justice Campus, 675 Justice Way, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday–Friday (arrive by 4:00 p.m. for same-day service). By mail, send the form, a self-addressed stamped envelope and a $4 money order for each copy; no personal checks [5]. The Census Geocoder places the City-County Building in Indianapolis city (balance); it didn't match the Community Justice Campus address [10].
Recorded documents (Marion County Recorder)
- Recording fees: $35.00 per document for a deed [26], and $35.00 for UCC filings regardless of page count [27]. Deeds also need the Marion County Assessor's transfer stamp, at $10.00 per parcel per document plus $20.00 for each sales disclosure if required, paid by a separate check or money order [26]. We didn't find a fee for other document types on the pages we read.
- Format: documents must be notarized, include Indiana's Social Security number redaction statement and leave a 2-inch top and bottom margin on the first and last pages. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope for paper returns [27].
- Copies: $1 a page ($5 a page larger than 11 by 17 inches), plus $5 for certification. Copies are usually ready one business day after a request [28].
- Where: City-County Building, 200 E. Washington St., Suite T-741, 317.327.4020, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday–Friday [28].
Court records (Marion County Clerk)
- Copy fees: $1 a page, and $3 to certify a record regardless of page count. The Clerk takes cash, money orders, cashier's checks and cards (with a small card fee), but no personal checks. For mailed requests, the office contacts you for payment [29].
- Where: Room W122 of the City-County Building or the Community Justice Campus, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday–Friday. Small claims records are kept by the courts, not the Clerk [29].
Apostilles and authentications (statewide)
- Fee (statewide): $2.00 per document from the Indiana Secretary of State. There's no fee for birth and death certificates, adoption documents, or student transcripts and diplomas [30][16]. Pay in person by credit, debit, check or money order, or by mail with a check or money order [30].
- One certificate (statewide): since July 1, 2022, Indiana uses a single certificate format and no longer tells apostilles and authentications apart. The certificates can't be used inside the United States [30].
- What it can authenticate (statewide): Indiana vital records only; marriage, divorce, death and birth certificates don't need notarization, but other documents do. A marriage license must first be certified by the current circuit court clerk of the county where the marriage took place. Federal documents go to the U.S. Department of State [30].
- Where (statewide): there's one office, at 302 W. Washington St., Room E-018, Indianapolis, IN 46204, with no branches. With an appointment it processes up to 10 documents while you wait; without one, up to 5. Phone (317) 234-9768 [30].
- Indianapolis note: the Secretary of State's only authentication office is at 302 W. Washington St. [30]; the Census Geocoder places it in Indianapolis city (balance) [10].
