Butte-Silver Bow, Montana document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, fax, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in Butte, Montana, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
- Butte-Silver Bow Public Library: its policy manual (reviewed and adopted September 2025) says no fees are charged for library equipment except fax, copies and computer printers, and that faxing is at the first-floor Circulation Desk with staff help [15]. It doesn't list the amounts, and we didn't find print, copy or fax prices on official pages.
- The UPS Store: we didn't find a Butte location listed by The UPS Store.
See printing prices and fax prices.
Notary in Butte
- Local options: we didn't find a free or low-cost public notary service on the Butte-Silver Bow pages we checked. See notary options.
- Fees (statewide): Montana law lets a notary "charge a fee not to exceed $10 for each notarial act," such as an acknowledgment, a signature witnessing or a jurat. A notary may add a travel fee (no more than the IRS standard mileage rate) or a fee for an electronic or remote notarization only if the notary explains it's extra and not set by law and you agree to the amount in advance. A notary who charges fees must display a list of them in English [7]. That's the same $10 cap as Wyoming and Arizona and double North Dakota's $5.
Passports in Butte
The U.S. Department of State's Passport Acceptance Facility Locator data lists two Butte facilities [4]:
| Facility | Address and phone | Passport hours (locator) | Photos |

| Silver Bow County Clerk of Court | 155 West Granite St., Rm 313, Butte, MT 59701. 406-497-6350 | Mon–Fri 9 a.m.–4 p.m. "WALK-INS - NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY" | Not listed as on site; the office says it doesn't take passport photos |
| Butte Post Office (USPS) | 701 Dewey Blvd., Butte, MT 59701. 406-494-2107 | Mon–Fri 10 a.m.–3 p.m. | Listed as on site |
- Clerk of the District Court: passport applications are accepted 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The office does not take passport photos. Its $35.00 acceptance agent execution fee may be paid by cash or check; the passport fee itself must be a check or money order [1]. The State Department fee amounts on that page may be out of date; use the State Department's fee page.
- Post office: the locator says to schedule at usps.com/scheduler [4].
- Post office fees (national): a $35.00 acceptance fee and a $15.00 photo fee "if needed" [8].
- Faster service (national): the State Department's 1–3 business day return delivery is $26.87, for passport books only [9].

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth and death certificates: Butte-Silver Bow Clerk & Recorder
- Birth records: certified copies for births in 1920 and later can be obtained at any Montana county Clerk & Recorder by mail or in person, for anyone born in Montana; records before 1920 come from the county of birth. Proof of identity is required, and state law limits who can get one [3].
- Death records: any Montana county can print a certified death record from 2003 on. For Butte-Silver Bow deaths before 2003, the office works with the Butte Archives; call for instructions [3].
- Fees: the county page says a certified death certificate has cost $7 since July 1, 2021 [3]. We didn't find the birth price on the page; state law sets it at $8 [5].
- Phone: (406) 497-6335 [3].
Birth and death certificates (statewide)
- Any county office (statewide): you can buy a Montana birth or death certificate in person at any county Clerk & Recorder's office in Montana, no matter which county the event happened in. Bring a current photo ID; you fill out the application there. A long-form birth certificate (often needed for dual citizenship or tribal enrollment) comes only from the state office in Helena or the Clerk & Recorder in the county of birth [6].
- County price (statewide law): state law sets the county clerk's fee at $8 for each certified copy of a birth certificate and $7 for each certified copy of a death certificate [5].
- State price: the Office of Vital Records charges $16 for every certificate, birth or death, certified or informational, abstract or long form [6][10]. Its fee schedule took effect Sept. 21, 2024 [10].
- State office (Helena): order by mail to Montana Vital Records, PO Box 4210, Helena, MT 59604, with a check or money order and a copy of your ID or a notarized application; online or by phone through VitalChek (1-888-877-1946) or VRO, which add card service fees. The office is closed to walk-ins. Questions: (406) 444-2685, option 2, or HHSVitalRecords@mt.gov [6].
- Late-October outage: the state notice says no Montana office issued birth certificates Oct. 21–25, 2026, during a move to a new records platform, and statewide issuance resumed Monday, Oct. 26 [10].
Marriage licenses: Clerk of the District Court
- Where and when: Courthouse, Room 313, 155 W. Granite St., (406) 497-6350. Licenses are issued 8 a.m.–4 p.m. [1].
- Fee: $53.00 by cash or money order. No personal checks and no credit or debit cards [1].
- What to bring: proof of age for each applicant; a driver's license or birth certificate is enough. If either of you was married before, know the county, state and date of the divorce or death [1].
- Validity: valid immediately and for 180 days [1].
- License fee (statewide law): $53 when one or both of you are present at the ceremony, or $83 when neither is (a double proxy) [11]. Marriage licenses come from the Clerk of District Court in Montana, not the Clerk & Recorder.
- Proof of age (statewide law): each applicant must provide a birth certificate or other satisfactory evidence of age [12].
Recorded documents: Butte-Silver Bow Clerk & Recorder
- Copies (statewide law): county clerk copy fees are 50 cents for the first page of a document and 25 cents for each later page, plus $2 for each certification with seal [5].
- Recording fees: we didn't find Butte-Silver Bow's recording fee schedule in our checks.
Court records: Clerk of the District Court
- Fees (statewide law): the clerk of district court charges $1 a page for the first 10 pages of copies from a file, for each request, and 50 cents for each additional page; 25 cents a page for copies sent by fax, email or other electronic means; $2 for each certificate with seal; $5 for a copy of a marriage license and $10 for a copy of a dissolution decree. A records search is $2 per name for each year, for up to 7 years, and $1 per name for each further year [11].
Apostilles (statewide)
Montana apostilles come from the Secretary of State in Helena, not the county. For a Montana birth or death certificate, note on your Vital Records application that it's for an apostille (you'll get a long form), and contact the Secretary of State's office to tell it the document is coming. Pay the Secretary of State $10.00 per apostille, separately from the Vital Records fee [13]. Vital Records will mail the certificate to the Secretary of State once it's issued; the Secretary of State's office is at (406) 444-1877 [6]. The Secretary of State charges $10 per document or notarization, regardless of the number of pages. You can submit online through its portal and pay by credit or debit card, or by mail or in person with its printed Certification Request Form and a check or money order; it can't accept cash. Normal processing is 3–5 business days from receipt, and we didn't find an expedite fee. Mail goes to the Notary & Certifications Division, PO Box 202801, Helena, MT 59620-2801; drop-offs go to Room 260 of the State Capitol. A free pre-check is available by email at sosnotary@mt.gov [16]. See the apostille guide.
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
Money orders
USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [14]. Other sellers: money order guide.
Shredding
- Free events: we didn't find a free document shred event on the official pages we checked for this guide.
