Los Angeles, California document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, fax, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in the City of Los Angeles, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
Los Angeles Public Library
- Printing: remote printing is offered at all open locations. With a library card or Guest Pass you get a free $6.25 daily allotment; black-and-white pages are $0.25 each and color pages $0.50, on letter-size paper only [4].
- Paying past the allotment: major credit or debit cards, or tap-to-pay such as Apple Pay and Android Pay, up to $50 a transaction. Cash isn't accepted [4].
- Print from home: jobs wait at the print release station for 24 hours; the library suggests calling first to make sure the location is open [4].
- Scanning: Central Library lists a scanner among its services [9], and the library's Cybernauts help with copying, printing and scanning [10]. We didn't find copy or scan prices.
- Fax: we didn't find fax service on the library pages we checked.
- Central Library: 630 W. 5th St., Los Angeles, CA 90071, (213) 228-7000. Hours are Mon–Thu 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Fri–Sat 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. and Sun 1–5 p.m. [9].
- The UPS Store: it lists 30 locations in Los Angeles; see its city page for addresses and phone numbers. That page says they offer packing, shipping, printing, shredding, notarizing, faxing and mailbox services [11]. We didn't find prices on the store pages.
See printing prices and fax prices.
Notary in Los Angeles
- Library: we didn't find notary service on the Los Angeles Public Library pages we checked.
- County and state offices: the County Clerk's LAX/Courthouse and Van Nuys branches list notary oaths and notary authentication among their services [1]; we didn't find whether county staff notarize documents for the public. The Secretary of State doesn't notarize documents [12].
- The UPS Store: its Los Angeles page lists notarizing [11]. We didn't find store notary prices; California's legal maximum is below.
- Fees now (statewide): California Government Code § 8211 caps notary fees at $15 for each signature on an acknowledgment and $15 for an oath or affirmation with a jurat; certifying a copy of a power of attorney is also $15 [6]. The Secretary of State's January 2026 Notary Public Handbook lists the same maximums and says a notary may charge less or nothing [13]. Notarizing vote-by-mail ballot envelopes, and a veteran's application or claim for benefits, is free [6].
- Scheduled change (statewide): AB 1597 (Chapter 39, Statutes of 2026), approved by the Governor on June 30, 2026, amends § 8211 to raise those caps to $20 [7]. The bill text doesn't print a start date; under the state constitution, a statute enacted at a regular session takes effect on January 1 after a 90-day period from enactment [14], which for this bill is Jan. 1, 2027. The published code section still shows $15 [6].
- Extras and remote notarization (statewide): the handbook says any travel fee should be entered separately in the notary's journal; it sets no travel amount [13]. California notaries can't yet perform remote online notarizations: those parts of the Online Notarization Act start once the Secretary of State finishes its system, or by Jan. 1, 2030, whichever is earlier [13].

- Paying by mail: make the check or money order payable to CDPH Vital Records, drawn on a U.S. bank; don't send cash. Requests without the right fee are returned. If no record is found, you get a Certificate of No Public Record and the fee is kept as a search fee [2].
- County copies: county recorders also issue certified copies; the county office for this city is below. County prices can differ from the state's.
Birth, death and marriage records: Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk
- County fees: an authorized certified copy is $34 for a birth record [17], $26 for a death record [18] and $19 for a public or confidential marriage record [19]. The first copy's fee isn't refunded, and a "No Record Statement" is issued if no record is found [17].
- Paying: cash, check or money order payable to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, or a credit or debit card, Apple Pay or Samsung Pay with a $1.75 service fee. E-checks, temporary checks and most foreign checks aren't accepted [17].
- Appointments: apply online first, then book an in-person appointment up to three weeks ahead and bring a valid photo ID [17]. Birth copies from 1962 to the present, except 1972–1977, and marriage and death copies from 1995 to the present, are issued the same day at Norwalk and at the branches that handle records [1]; older death records are mailed within 20 business days [18].
- Confidential marriage records: only the spouses, or someone with a court order, can get a copy [19].
- Nearby branches: East Los Angeles, 4716 E. Cesar E. Chavez Ave., Building C (Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m.); LAX/Courthouse, 11701 S. La Cienega Blvd., 6th Floor; Van Nuys, 14340 W. Sylvan St.; and Florence/Firestone, 7807 Compton Ave., 1st Floor, Room 102 (Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. at the last three). Marriage licenses: Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk
- Fees: $91 for a public marriage license, $85 for a confidential license, $35 for a civil ceremony and $20 for a county-provided ceremony witness [8].
- How: complete the application online, save the confirmation number, then book an in-person license appointment up to three weeks ahead and bring a valid photo ID. Express ceremonies are by appointment at all seven branch locations and need one witness; confidential licenses don't need a witness [20].
Recorded documents: Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk
- Recording fees: the regular recording fee is a $15.00 base fee plus $3.00 for each additional page. Most documents also carry the $75.00 SB 2 Building Homes and Jobs Act fee unless exempt, the $10.00 real estate fraud fee and the $2.00 AB 1466 fee. Deeds have their own fee lists, and other special fees can apply [21].
- Copies: a certified copy of a recorded document is $6.00 for the first page and $3.00 for each additional page. A plain copy is $5.00 for the first page and $3.00 for each additional page. A conformed copy is free if you provide a copy and a self-addressed stamped envelope [21].
- Where: documents are recorded at Norwalk and at the LAX/Courthouse and Van Nuys branches [1]. The recorder takes cash, checks and money orders, but not e-checks [21].
Court records: California superior courts (statewide fees)
- Fees (statewide): under Government Code § 70627, the court clerk charges $0.50 a page to prepare copies of a record on file, $1 a page to compare a copy you bring with the original (plus the certificate fee), and $15 for a records search that takes a court employee more than 10 minutes [22].

- Online case documents: $1.00 a page for the first 5 pages of a document, then $0.40 a page, up to $40.00 a document [24].
Apostilles (statewide)
- Who: California apostilles come from the Secretary of State, not the county. The document must be signed by a California public official or be an original notarized or certified document; photocopies aren't accepted [3]. The office doesn't notarize, so get the notarization first [12].
- Birth and death certificates: a certificate signed by a local health officer or registrar may first need certifying by the county clerk, or you can get a certified copy from the county recorder or CDPH [12].
- Fee: $20.00 per apostille. Include a cover sheet naming the country where the document will be used. In person there is also a $6.00 special handling fee for each different public official's signature [3].
- In person, same day: Sacramento, 1500 11th Street, 3rd Floor (card, check, money order or cash), or Los Angeles, 300 South Spring Street, Room 12513, with no appointments (card, check or money order; no cash). The Los Angeles office says it is temporarily serving customers on the 1st floor in Suite 1215 because of an elevator outage [3].
- By mail: Sacramento only, with a $20.00 check or money order per apostille payable to Secretary of State and a self-addressed return envelope. USPS mail goes to Notary Public Section, P.O. Box 942877, Sacramento, CA 94277-0001; FedEx, UPS or DHL to 1500 11th Street, 2nd Floor, Sacramento, CA 95814. Mail requests aren't expedited [3]. The office also runs pop-up apostille events around the state[3]. See the apostille guide.
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.

USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [25]. Other sellers: money order guide.
