Ann Arbor, Michigan document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, fax, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in Ann Arbor, Michigan, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
Ann Arbor District Library
- Where and when: the library lists five locations, including the Downtown Library at 343 South Fifth Ave., and says all locations are open for browsing, seating, checkout and phone calls 10AM - 8PM daily [12]. The Census Geocoder places the Downtown Library in Ann Arbor city [11]. The page has an Annual Closures section, but we couldn't read its dates; call 734-327-4200 [12].
- Printing: print from your own device at the library or on its public computers; the first 30 pages are free, then $.10 per page. Color printing is not available. The online print submission service has ended [2]. Public computers are at all five locations; non-cardholders must show a photo ID [13].
- Copies, scanning and fax: we didn't find copier, scanner or fax service on the library's locations, services, printing or notary pages [12][13][2][1]. Ask the library at 734-327-4200 [12].
- The UPS Store: it lists 4 locations in Ann Arbor: 2232 S Main, (734) 662-7777; 2531 Jackson Ave, (734) 622-8000; 5627 Jackson Rd, Unit 103, (734) 369-3272; and 3588 Plymouth Rd, (734) 662-6666. Its city page says its stores offer packing, shipping, printing, shredding, notarizing, faxing and mailbox services [14]. We didn't find prices; The UPS Store's site says products, services, prices and hours may vary by location [15]. The Census Geocoder places the S Main, Jackson Ave and Plymouth Rd stores in Ann Arbor city and the Jackson Rd store in Washtenaw County outside any city [14][11].

Notary in Ann Arbor
- Ann Arbor District Library (free): notary services are free to the public by appointment only, and you don't need a library card. Appointments are at the Downtown Library only, Monday through Friday between 10am and 5:30pm; weekend and same-day bookings aren't available. Request a time with the library's online form [1]. Bring a valid state- or federally-issued ID with a photo and signature. Appointments last 30 minutes, and the library can provide up to 2 witnesses [16]. AADL notaries can't provide a Medallion Signature Guarantee [1].
- Washtenaw County Clerk: the clerk's notary page covers becoming a notary: file your application, surety bond and Michigan driver's license in person at Vital Records, with a $10 filing fee [17]. The county's July 2, 2025 fee resolution lists a $10 Notarization fee under the Administration/Elections Division [18], but we didn't find a clerk page that says whether the office notarizes documents for the public. Call the clerk at 734-222-6700 to confirm [9].
- The UPS Store: its Ann Arbor page lists notarizing [14]. We didn't find prices.
- How notaries are commissioned (statewide): the Michigan Department of State commissions notaries. Applicants file a $10,000 surety bond with the county clerk and take the oath of office there. A commission lasts 6 to 7 years and ends on the notary's birthday; there's no renewal, so notaries apply for a new commission each time [19][20]. Once commissioned, a Michigan notary can notarize anywhere in Michigan, but not outside the state [19].
- Fees (statewide law): a Michigan notary may charge "not more than $10.00 for any individual transaction or notarial act" and must post a sign or tell you the fee before notarizing. A separate travel fee can be agreed before the notary travels. A notary may refuse to perform a notarial act [21].
- No true copies (statewide): a Michigan notary can't certify that a copy is a true copy of a document [22][23]. A county clerk can certify true copies of documents kept in the clerk's office [20]. Otherwise, only the issuer or the person named on the document can make a true copy statement; a notary can notarize that person's signature [23].

We read the Washtenaw County pages below in a web browser on Nov 1, 2026, because our automated check couldn't read their content.
- Washtenaw County Clerk (200 N Main St, Suite 120): passport applications are accepted by appointment only. The county's page says to make an appointment, but we didn't find how to book one. The page lists a $35 processing fee for each applicant, payable to the Washtenaw County Clerk by cash, check or credit (Visa, Discover or MasterCard only). Every applicant must also bring a check or money order for the U.S. Department of State fee, a separate check per applicant. Phone: 734-222-6730 [3].
- Who should book here: the county's page lists new applicants, children under 16, people over 16 renewing a 5-year passport issued under age 16, and people renewing a passport issued more than 15 years ago. If you're renewing a 10-year passport issued less than 15 years ago, it says not to make an appointment [3].
- Photos (sources differ): the locator lists photos as on site at the County Clerk [24], but the county's page says applicants must bring their own passport photograph, and it lists no photo service or price [3]. Bring a photo unless the clerk tells you otherwise.
- Hours (sources differ): the locator lists County Clerk passport hours of Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. [24]. The county's passport page lists general office hours of Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm [3]. Confirm your appointment time with the clerk.
- Post office fees (national): a $35.00 acceptance fee and a $15.00 photo fee "if needed" [25].
- Faster return delivery (national): two official pages list different prices. USPS lists "$22.05—1- to 3- day delivery service for faster return shipping to you from the State Department" [25]. The State Department's fee page lists 1–3 business day return delivery at $26.87, for passport books only [26]. We couldn't re-read the State Department page on Nov 1, 2026, because it blocked our check. Confirm the fee with the acceptance facility before you pay.

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
We read the Washtenaw County pages below in a web browser on Nov 1, 2026, because our automated check couldn't read their content.
Birth and death certificates (Washtenaw County Clerk)
- Fees: $15 for the first copy and $5 for each additional copy of the same record bought at the same time. A senior 65 or older ordering their own birth certificate pays $5 [4][5]. The county's request form lists the same amounts [27].
- Online fees (sources differ in detail): the county's pages say additional service fees apply to online orders but don't list the amount [4][28]. The county's July 2, 2025 fee resolution lists a $2 online service fee per transaction for death, marriage or business name copies, payable to the county, and $5 per record paid to the vendor for birth or military discharge copies [18]. Check the total before you pay online.
- Which records: the office can issue only births and deaths that occurred in Washtenaw County and marriage licenses obtained there [27]. Its birth and death records go back to 1867 [4][5].
- Who can order a birth record (county): only the person on the record, a parent named on it, or a legal guardian or representative; heirs, guardians and representatives need more paperwork. Include a photocopy of the front of your valid driver's license or state ID [4]. ID isn't required for death, marriage or business name records [28]. The death certificates page doesn't say who may order [5].
- Where and how: online (credit card), by mail (check or money order payable to the Washtenaw County Clerk) or in person, where records are issued on the spot [28]. In person at Vital Records, 200 N Main St, Suite 100; Mon–Fri 8:30 am to 4:30 pm; it takes cash, check, money order, debit and credit (Visa, MasterCard or Discover only). Mail to P.O. Box 8645, Ann Arbor, MI 48107-8645. Phone: 734-222-6720 [4].
Birth and death certificates from the state (statewide)
- State fees (statewide): the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) lists a $34 search fee for a standard record, or $42 for an apostille or exemplified record for use outside the U.S. Online orders add a $14 processing fee [29]. State law sets $34.00 for a search with 1 certified copy, $16.00 for each additional identical copy ordered at the same time, $12.00 for each additional year searched and $12.00 for an expedited search [30]. If you're 65 or older and ordering your own birth record, the state charges $14.00 for one certified copy [29][30]. Search fees aren't refunded [29].
- Local fees (statewide law): a local government may set local registrar fees at or below the state amounts. A charter county with more than 1,500,000 people may set higher fees, but not more than the cost of the service [30]. County fees on this page can differ from the state's.
- How to order from the state (statewide): by mail, online or by phone at 866-443-9897 through VitalChek (the state's only authorized online provider, with an extra fee), at the drop box in the main lobby of 333 S. Grand Ave., Lansing (Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.), or in person by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Will Call orders placed through VitalChek are processed within 2–5 business days for pickup in Lansing. The state takes checks or money orders payable to the State of Michigan, credit cards and cash. Questions: 517-335-8666 [29].
- Processing times (statewide): MDHHS currently lists 8–10 weeks for expedited and 10–12 weeks for regular birth, death, marriage and divorce orders, and 8–10 weeks (expedited) or 12–16 weeks (regular) for authenticated or apostilled records [29].
- Who can order a birth record (statewide): the person named on the record, parents named on it, a legal heir, a court-appointed guardian, someone with a power of attorney that specifically grants access to vital records, or a licensed attorney for the person or parents. Records more than 100 years old aren't restricted [29].
Marriage licenses (Washtenaw County Clerk)
- Marriage license fee (statewide law): Michigan law sets a $20.00 license fee, plus $10.00 more if both of you live outside Michigan. A charter county with more than 1,500,000 people may set a different fee by ordinance [31]. Check the county fee below.
- Waiting period (statewide law): the license can't be handed over within 3 days, counting the day you apply. The county clerk may release it right away for good cause, for a fee set by the county board. The license is void if you don't marry within 33 days after you apply [32].
- Washtenaw County fees: $20 per couple for Michigan residents and $30 for out-of-state residents, whose marriage must take place in Washtenaw County. Waiving the three-day wait costs $50 [7], the same as in the county's fee resolution [18]. It takes cash, check, money order, debit and credit (Visa, MasterCard or Discover only) [7].
- How: apply by video appointment or in person, with no appointment needed, 8:30 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday at 200 N Main Street, Suite 100. The busiest hours are noon - 2pm and 3pm - 4pm. Both of you must be 18 or older, and at least one of you must appear in person. Bring ID with your correct address, a government-issued birth certificate (not a hospital record; it need not be certified) and your Social Security card or number [7].
- Timing: the license becomes valid on the 3rd day after you apply, and the ceremony must be within 33 days of applying. Certified copies should be ready 7 to 10 business days after the marriage [7].
- Copies: $15 for the first copy and $5 for each additional copy bought at the same time; online orders add service fees. The index is searchable for filings after January 1959 [6].
Recorded documents (Washtenaw County Register of Deeds)
- Fees: recording is $30 per document, plus $3 for each additional instrument assigned or discharged. The page notes that, effective October 1, 2016, all documents cost $30 to record regardless of the number of pages. Copies are $1 per page in person or by mail, or $1.20 per page online, and certification of copies is $5 [33].
- Payment: cash (in person only), check and credit (Visa, MasterCard and Discover only) [33]. Clerk / Register of Deeds main phone: 734-222-6700 [9].
Court records (Washtenaw County Trial Court)
- Where and when: 101 E Huron Street; service counters are open 8 am to 4:30 pm. Records can be viewed at the main office of the Clerk of the Court-Court Services. Phone: 734-222-3270 [10].
- Copy fees (sources differ): the Trial Court's General Info page doesn't list copy fees [10]. Its documents request form lists regular copies at $2.00 per page and certified copies at $10 for certification plus $1 per page. The form also lists a different phone number, (734)222-3024, and says to mail the form with payment to the Records Department, PO Box 8645, Ann Arbor, MI 48107 [34]. The form isn't dated, so call the court to confirm the fees.
Apostilles and authentications (statewide)
- Fee (statewide): $1 per document from the Michigan Department of State's Office of the Great Seal, paid by check or money order payable to the State of Michigan. Don't send cash [22][23]. The request form lists the fee as $1.00 per authentication, not per page, and asks for the country where the document will be used (not the USA) [35].
- What it can authenticate (statewide): documents notarized by a Michigan notary, and certified copies of birth, marriage, divorce or death records from the State Registrar or a Michigan county clerk. Documents from court clerks, or sent by fax, aren't accepted [22]. Court and register of deeds documents must be notarized first [23]. City clerk records: the service page accepts them from city clerks in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties [22], and one FAQ answer agrees, but another FAQ answer says city registrars in Wayne County only [23]. If yours is from a city clerk, confirm with the Office of the Great Seal.
- Where and how (statewide): by mail to the Office of the Great Seal, 7064 Crowner Drive, Lansing, MI 48918, with the request form, the fee and a self-addressed stamped envelope; or in person by appointment on Mondays or Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Phone (888) 767-6424 [22]. The office is in the Richard H. Austin Building, 430 W. Allegan, 1st floor, Lansing [36].
- How long (statewide, sources differ): the service page and FAQs say turnaround is 1–2 weeks [22][23], but the request form says to allow 4–6 weeks after the office receives it [35]. There's no expedited service [23][35]. Confirm with the office if you have a deadline.
- Ann Arbor note: the Office of the Great Seal accepts certified vital records from Michigan county clerks [22], which includes Washtenaw County Clerk copies. Court documents must be notarized before they can be authenticated [23].
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
Money orders
USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [37]. Other sellers: money order guide.
Shredding
- Recycle Ann Arbor Drop-Off Station: 2950 East Ellsworth Rd.; 734.971.7400. It takes documents for secure shredding: they go into locked boxes and are shredded offsite, with prices based on the number of grocery bags or banker boxes. Every customer pays a $3 gate fee, and it takes credit cards only, no cash or checks. Public drop-off hours are Tues. & Thurs. 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, Friday 7 am to 4 pm and Saturday 9 am to 6 pm; it's closed Monday, Wednesday and Sunday. The page refers to its price list for shredding fees; we didn't find those prices on this page [38]. The Census Geocoder places the station in Ann Arbor city [11].
- Past live shredding event: the page's 2026 schedule lists a live shredding event on Saturday, October 10, 9 am – 12 pm. That event is over. It was free for current Ann Arbor, Pittsfield and Ypsilanti Drop-Off Station passholders, and $6.00 per grocery bag or $8.00 per banker's box plus the $3 gate fee for everyone else [38].
- The UPS Store: its Ann Arbor page lists shredding [14]. We didn't find prices.
For paid per-pound shredding, see where to shred documents.
