Akron, Ohio document errands: printing, fax, notary, passports and certified copies (2026)
Where to print, notarize, apply for a passport and get certified copies in Akron, Ohio, using only official and provider pages. Each fact links to its source. Some facts are statewide or national rather than local. We label those.
Printing, copying, scanning and fax
Akron-Summit County Public Library
- Prices: copying and printing cost 5¢ a side for black and white and 25¢ a side for color. Payment is cash only: the coin machines take coins and $1 bills, not credit cards [2].
- Scanning and fax (free): scanning is free, and you can save scans to a USB drive or send them to an email address. Faxing is free, local and long distance [2].
- Where: copy machines and printers are at all library locations. Paper comes in 8.5 x 11 and 11 x 17 only. Mobile printing works from your computer or phone, from inside or outside the library [2]. Laminating is 50¢ at TechZone@Main [2].
- Main Library: 60 South High Street, 330.643.9000. Hours are Monday–Thursday 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday 1–5 p.m. [8]. The Census Geocoder places 60 S High St in Akron city [9].
- The UPS Store: its Akron page lists 6 locations, one marked coming soon (2420 Wedgewood Dr), and says the stores offer packing, shipping, printing, shredding, notarizing, faxing and mailbox services [10]. The Census Geocoder places 810 South Main Street and 1700 W Market St in Akron city, 3465 S Arlington Rd, Unit E in Green city and 3458 Manchester Rd, Ste 2 outside any city. It didn't match 3867 W Market St [10][9]. Prices aren't listed online: the 810 South Main Street store page shows no prices and says products, services, pricing and hours of operation may vary by location [11], so call the store for prices (last checked Nov 1, 2026).
See printing prices and fax prices.
Notary in Akron
- Akron-Summit County Public Library (free): the library notarizes many documents free of charge during Main Library's regular hours. Call ahead to make sure a notary is available, and arrive at least an hour before closing [1].
- Library limits: up to 3 documents at a time, of no more than 10 pages each. The library won't notarize real estate documents or quit claim deeds, corporate documents, wills, living wills, living trusts, codicils or depositions, or powers of attorney, among others. It can't notarize I-9 forms [1].
- What to bring: bring a valid ID and any witnesses you need. The library can't provide witnesses, and its notary staff speak English only [1].
- Certified copies (statewide): the library says Ohio notaries can't certify documents, such as copies of passports, driver's licenses or birth certificates [1].
- The UPS Store: its Akron page lists notarizing [10]. Prices aren't listed online; call the store [11].
- How notaries are commissioned (statewide law): the Ohio Secretary of State issues all notary commissions. Applicants must be at least 18 and Ohio residents (or attorneys admitted in Ohio who practice here), and most must submit a criminal records check from the past six months and complete an education program and test [12]. A commission lasts five years unless revoked; attorneys keep theirs as long as they qualify [13]. Ohio notaries are commissioned "for the state" [12] and have statewide jurisdiction [14].
- Fees (statewide; state law and the Secretary of State agree): an Ohio notary may charge up to $5 per traditional or electronic notarial act, plus a reasonable travel fee agreed before the act [15][16]. For a remote online notarization, the limit is $30 per act plus a technology fee of up to $10 per online session, which can be charged even if the act isn't completed [15][16]. Fees can't be charged per signature [15].
- When the online fee changed (sources differ by a day): the Revised Code section shows an effective date of April 3, 2025 [15]. The Secretary of State says House Bill 315, effective April 4, 2025, raised the online maximum from $25 to $30 and allowed the $10 technology fee [17].
- Appearing in person (statewide): for a traditional or electronic notarization, you must appear in person before the notary, and the notary must be physically in Ohio. A remote online notary needs Secretary of State authorization and must be in Ohio, but the signer can be outside Ohio [16].
- ID (statewide): bring a passport, driver's license or government-issued ID with your photo and signature, either current or expired no more than 3 years. A notary can't identify you over the phone [16].
- Check a notary (statewide): the Secretary of State commissions Ohio notaries [18] and has a public Notary Search to look one up [18].

- Post office fees (national): a $35.00 acceptance fee and a $15.00 photo fee "if needed" [21].
- Faster return delivery (national): two official pages list different prices. USPS lists "$22.05—1- to 3- day delivery service for faster return shipping to you from the State Department" [21]. The State Department's fee page lists 1–3 business day return delivery at $26.87, for passport books only [22]. We couldn't re-read the State Department page on Nov 1, 2026, because it blocked our check. Confirm the fee with the acceptance facility before you pay.
- The library's description: the library's fee list labels the $22.05 fee "Overnight delivery (book only)" [5].

Birth, death, marriage, court and recorded-document copies
Birth and death certificates (Summit County Public Health)
- Fee: $22.00 a certified copy. Credit and debit card orders add a $1.95 convenience fee. Make checks and money orders payable to Summit County Public Health [23]. That's more than the state's $21.50 in the statewide section below. Summit County Public Health says local fees in Ohio range from $21.50 to $27.00 per record [3].
- What it issues: certified copies for any person born or who died in Ohio: births from Dec. 20, 1908, and deaths from Jan. 1, 1971, to the present. Uncertified copies aren't available under Ohio law [3].
- Walk-in (under 10 minutes): Fairway Center, Building A, 1867 W Market Street; (330) 812-3845. Hours are Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. No appointment or ID is needed. The exception is a death certificate within five years of the death that must show the Social Security number, which needs proof of relationship [3]. The Census Geocoder didn't match this address [9].
- Payment at the counter: cash, checks, money orders and major debit or credit cards. Digital wallets such as Apple Pay aren't accepted [3].
- Midday: the outdoor walk-up window and curbside delivery may be limited from noon to 2:00 p.m., but the indoor windows stay open [3].
- By phone: call (330) 812-3845 to order for same-day pickup [3]. For 24/7 ordering in two languages, call 1-866-221-6684; that service costs $9.95 [23].
- Online: $22.00 a copy, plus a $1.95 credit card processing fee and shipping [24]. All sales are final [3].
Birth and death certificates from the state (statewide)
- State fee (statewide): the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) charges $21.50 for a certified birth or death record. Since Jan. 1, 2025, that $21.50 is a search fee, charged whether or not a record is found [25]. State law says the state fee can't be less than $12, and that local offices and the state add a $5 fee to each certified copy [26]. Local offices can charge more than the state: compare the city fee above.
- Any Ohio birth, at local offices (statewide): ODH says more than 100 local offices offer same-day certified copies of Ohio vital records in person or in other ways [25]. State law lets a local registrar issue a certified copy to any applicant, unless the record is no longer public [27].
- How to order from the state (statewide): online by credit card (processed within five business days; about three weeks for delivery by mail; no expedited service), or by mail to ODH Bureau of Vital Statistics, PO Box 15098, Columbus, Ohio 43215-0098, with a check or money order (four to six weeks) [25]. Online birth certificates are abstract copies that ODH says are valid for all U.S. legal uses, including passports [25].
- State office walk-in (statewide): 4200 Surface Road, Columbus, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., only for central Ohio customers who need an expedited copy of their birth record and pay by credit card [25].
- Deaths before 1971 (statewide): the state's records are with the Ohio History Connection. ODH says to get certified copies from the local health department where the death happened [25].
Marriage licenses (Summit County Probate Court)
- Where to apply (statewide law): both of you appear in person at the probate court of the county where either of you lives. If neither of you lives in Ohio, apply in the county where you plan to marry [28].
- Waiting period and validity (statewide law): a probate judge may grant the license "at any time after the application is made" [28], and the license expires 60 days after it's issued [29]. A passport is one of the accepted proofs of age [28]. Ohio law doesn't set one statewide license fee; check the county fee below.
- Summit County fee: $64.00, which includes 2 certified copies of your marriage abstract. Credit cards carry a 5% processing fee. The application fee isn't refundable [4]. Of the $64.00, $17.00 goes to a State of Ohio fund that aids abused and battered spouses [4].
- How: apply online through the court's eMarriage application, paying by credit card. Then you both go to the court within 30 days to get the license [4][30].
- Where and when (the court's pages differ): the Marriage License Department is at 209 South High Street. The eMarriage page lists its hours as 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday–Friday [30]. The court's header lists Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m. [30]. The marriage page advises arriving by 3:30 p.m. [4]. The Census Geocoder places 209 S High St in Akron city [9].
- What to bring: each of you brings a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport, military ID or green card). If you don't know a parent's birth name, bring your birth certificate. If your most recent marriage ended in divorce, dissolution or annulment, bring a certified copy of the decree [4].
- Which county: apply in the county where either of you lives. If you live outside Ohio, apply where the ceremony will be. If your ID shows another county, the court requires proof of Summit County residency [4].
- Validity: the license is valid for 60 days after it's issued [4].
- Courthouse weddings: schedule civil ceremonies with Akron Municipal Court at (330) 375-2059 [4][31]. The marriage license desk is (330) 643-2346 [31].
- Copies: more certified copies of the abstract are $2.00 each at the Probate Court Records Room. Credit cards add a 3% charge. By mail, send a self-addressed stamped envelope, $2.00 in cash or a money order (no out-of-state checks) and a letter of request [4].
Recorded documents (Summit County Fiscal Office)
- Recording fees: $34.00 for the first two pages and $8.00 for each additional page [32][33]. The fee page isn't dated [32]. Lucas County's recorder says Senate Bill 94 raised most recording fees by $5.00 on April 1, 2026 [34]. Confirm the current fee with the Fiscal Office before you record.
- Copies: $2.00 a page, and certification is $1.00 per document [32]. The FAQ says a deed copy by mail is $4, plus $1.00 to certify it; include a stamped, self-addressed envelope [33].
- Where: Recording Division, 175 South Main Street, 4th Floor; 330-643-2712. Turnaround is 3–5 working days [33]. The Census Geocoder places 175 S Main St in Akron city [9].
Court records (Summit County Clerk of Courts)
- Copy fees: copies are $0.10 a page and certified copies are $1.00 a page. Authentication (exemplification) is $5.00 [35].
- Where: the File Room is in the basement of 205 S. High Street. The clerk recommends getting records from 2002 to the present on its website. For older records, submit a public records form; call (330) 643-8082 for help [35]. The Legal Division is open Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; 330-643-2211 [36].
Apostilles and authentications (statewide)
- What it is (statewide): the Ohio Secretary of State issues apostilles for countries in the Hague Convention and authentications for other countries, which may also need a step at the U.S. Department of State's Office of Authentications. Neither can be used inside the U.S. Only documents issued by an Ohio official or notarized by an Ohio notary qualify [37][38].
- Fee and payment (statewide): $5 per document, exact fee only [37][39]. Pay by check, money order or credit card. A mailed credit card payment needs the Credit Card Authorization form. Don't send cash, and foreign checks and money orders aren't accepted [37][40][39].
- By mail (statewide): send the completed Request Form 8003, the documents, and a self-addressed stamped envelope or prepaid express delivery label to Ohio Secretary of State, Client Service Center, 180 Civic Center Dr., Columbus, OH 43215-4138 [40]. Mailed requests are processed in two to three days from receipt [37][40].
- In person: the form says documents can be delivered in person for faster service [40], but we didn't find walk-in hours or an in-person address on the Secretary of State's pages.
- Accepted (statewide): originals certified by an Ohio official; birth and death certificates certified by the Ohio Department of Health; certified copies of marriage licenses from the probate court that issued them; certified copies of divorce decrees, probated wills, judgments and citizenship records from the county Clerk of Courts where they were filed; certified copies of business documents on file with the Secretary of State; and documents properly notarized by an Ohio notary [40].
- Rejected (statewide): improperly notarized documents; documents notarized by a notary outside Ohio; originals certified by another state or country; FBI background checks; citizenship documents not issued by an Ohio county Clerk of Courts; federal court and federal documents, including those from the Departments of Justice, Treasury, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; and documents for use in the United States [40]. Federal agency documents go to the U.S. Department of State, federal court documents to the issuing court and FBI checks to the FBI [37].
- Before you send (statewide): school records and transcripts must be notarized first. The office doesn't translate, so translate a document first and then have it notarized. Don't detach or reattach certificates [37].
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.
Money orders
USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [41]. Other sellers: money order guide.
Shredding
- No shredded paper at the curb: the City of Akron and Summit County ReWorks both say not to put shredded paper in home recycling carts. Recycling goes in loose, never bagged [42][43]. Questions: 3-1-1 or (330) 375-2311 [42].
- Shred vendors (paid): ReWorks lists Allied InfoTech, 2170 Romig Rd. (330-753-8383), and Weaver SecurShred, 2337 Romig Rd. (330-745-2400). It says to contact the vendor to confirm hours and fees [44]. The Census Geocoder places both in Akron city [9]. We didn't find prices.
- Shred events: we didn't find a free shred event on ReWorks' document shredding page as of Nov. 1, 2026 [44]. ReWorks Recycling Days (for Summit County residents and businesses, at 1201 Graham Road in Stow) don't list paper shredding among accepted items. The October 2026 dates are past; upcoming dates are Nov. 16, 17, 18 and 20 and Dec. 14, 15, 16 and 18, 3 to 6 p.m. [45] (last checked Nov 1, 2026).
- The UPS Store: its Akron page lists shredding; prices aren't listed online [10][11].
For paid per-pound shredding, see where to shred documents.
