Printing, copying, scanning and fax
Montgomery City-County Public Library
- Printing and copying: $0.20 a page for black and white and $0.50 a page for color [4].
- Fax: at every branch, $2.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each extra page [4][9]. Library staff send the faxes, and the library doesn't receive incoming faxes for the public [9].
- Scanning: free at every branch, saved only as PDFs to your own storage device or emailed to you. Staff will show you how to do scans over 5 pages yourself [9].
- Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library (main library): 245 High St., Montgomery, AL 36104, (334) 625-4999. Fall/winter hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday–Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday [10].
- The UPS Store: it lists 4 locations under Montgomery, and the Census Geocoder places all 4 inside Montgomery city [11][2]. Its city page says its stores offer packing, shipping, printing, shredding, notarizing, faxing and mailbox services [11]. We didn't find prices: the store page we checked, for the store at 3066 Zelda Rd., doesn't list any [12], and The UPS Store's site says products, services, prices and hours may vary by location [13].
See printing prices and fax prices.
Notary in Montgomery
- Montgomery City-County Public Library: $5 per notary act, so three stamps or signatures cost $15. Cardholders of at least 30 days get one free notary service a year. It takes credit cards or cash [3].
- How it works: by appointment only, in Library Administration at the Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday–Friday. Call 334-625-4300, ideally at least a day ahead; if you're 20 minutes late, the appointment counts as canceled. Bring unexpired government photo ID and the whole unsigned document. If you need a witness, bring your own; library staff and other patrons can't serve [3].
- The UPS Store: its Montgomery page lists notarizing [11]. We didn't find prices.
- Becoming a notary in Montgomery County: the probate court charges a $10.00 application fee and, when you record your bond, a $59.00 filing fee, both by check or money order. The $59.00 covers the $25.00 fee to issue the commission, $15.00 for the appointment proceedings and recording, $10.00 for approving the bond, a $3.00 stamp fee, and $5.00 index and $1.00 certification fees. The bond is $50,000 [14].
- How notaries are commissioned (statewide): in Alabama, notaries apply to and are commissioned by the probate judge of their county, for four-year terms. New and renewal applicants must finish a training program from the Alabama Probate Judges Association and the Alabama Law Institute; attorneys are exempt. The Secretary of State tells applicants to ask their county probate judge about application, bond and fee requirements [15]. Act 2023-548 sets a $50,000 bond [16].
- Fees (statewide law): Act 2023-548 lets a notary charge "a reasonable fee, not to exceed ten dollars ($10), for each notarial act performed." State, county and city employees may not charge for a notarial act done as part of their public job, unless another law allows it [16]. The Alabama Department of Public Health says your personal bank "should provide notary services for free" [6].
- Remote notarization (statewide): since Oct. 1, 2026, Act 2026-536 adds rules for remote notarization; the notary must be physically in Alabama and keep the audio-video recording for seven years [15].

Changes, corrections and registrations of Alabama birth and death certificates are still handled at the RSA Tower, by appointment only, (334) 206-2637 [5].
Marriage certificates (Alabama has no marriage licenses)
- No marriage licenses (statewide): since Aug. 29, 2019, Alabama probate courts no longer issue marriage licenses. Instead, the couple completes the Alabama Marriage Certificate form and delivers it to a probate court for recording within 30 days of the later of the two signatures. You can record it in any Alabama county probate court, and each probate court sets its own recording fee [6].
- Notary (statewide): the form must be notarized by a notary authorized under Alabama law; a form notarized by an out-of-state notary isn't accepted [6].
- Copies and corrections (statewide): certified copies are $15.00 from the state (see above) or any county health department. Corrections go through the probate court that issued the license or recorded the certificate [21].

- Probate offices: the passport locator lists the probate court's West Office (3075 Mobile Hwy.), South Office (3425 McGehee Rd.) and East Office (5449 Atlanta Hwy.) [1]. We didn't confirm which of them record marriage certificates.
Recorded documents (deeds and other land records)
- Montgomery County Probate Court recording fees: a basic one-page document (lien, assignment, judgment or release) totals $8.50: a $5.00 index fee, a $2.50 per-page charge (for up to two names for grantor or grantee) and a $1.00 certification fee. Additional names are $1.00 per name, and additional book and page references $1.00 each [26].
- Deed and mortgage tax: deed tax adds $.50 per $500, or $1.00 per thousand, on the value of the property conveyed; mortgage tax is $.15 per $100, or $1.50 per thousand [26].
- Copies: $1.00 a page, plus $2.00 per document for a certified copy [26][27].
- Where and when: Records & Recording is in the basement of Courthouse Annex III, 101 South Lawrence Street, Montgomery, AL 36104, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Documents presented for recording after 4:00 p.m. are recorded the next business day. Phone (334) 832-1240 (main) or (334) 832-1236 (recording) [27].
- ZIP code differs by page: the county's probate court page lists Courthouse Annex III, 101 S. Lawrence St., Montgomery, AL 36101, P.O. Box 223 [28], while the Records & Recording page gives ZIP 36104 [27]. Confirm with the office at (334) 832-1240 before you mail.
- Paying: we didn't find the payment methods for recording deeds and other documents, or whether the probate court charges a card fee, on the pages we read [26][27].
Court records
- Montgomery County Circuit Clerk: Phelps-Price Justice Center, 251 S. Lawrence St., Montgomery, AL 36104, (334) 832-1260, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday–Friday [29].
- We didn't find copy or certified copy prices, or payment methods for copies, on the clerk's pages we read; its circuit civil page lists filing fees, not copy prices [30].
City of Montgomery public records
- Fees (as of April 7, 2025): assessment letters $75 per address (the page writes "$75.oo"); certificates of occupancy $25.00 per address; building code violations $25.00 per address, per report; inspection reports $25.00; fire inspections or reports $25.00 per report; burn notices $25.00; zoning, variances and special exceptions $25.00 per report, per address; police reports through FOIA $25.00 each [31].
- Paying and hours: checks or money orders payable to the City of Montgomery, 103 N. Perry St. The page says not to send a check until you're notified. Records can be accessed Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and requests need a full physical address [31].
Apostilles and certifications (statewide)
- Fee (statewide): $5.00 per document from the Alabama Secretary of State's Authentication Division. It accepts check or money order payable to the Secretary of State, cash or a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover) [32][33].
- Which one (statewide): countries in the Hague Convention get an Apostille; other countries get a Certification [32].
- Whose signature (statewide): an Apostille goes on documents signed and sealed by a currently commissioned Alabama notary, probate judge or the current State Registrar; birth and death certificates must carry the current State Registrar's signature. A Certification goes on documents signed by a probate judge, circuit clerk or the current State Registrar, and a notarized document also needs a county authentication from the probate judge of the county where the notary is commissioned. Federal documents aren't authenticated by the state [32].
- Where (statewide): mail the submittal form and documents to the Authentication Division, 11 South Union Street, Suite 224, Montgomery, AL 36130, and allow five business days for mail time. Walk-in service is 8:00 to 5:00 Monday–Friday. Phone (334) 242-5325 [33].
- Montgomery County step: if your notarized document is going to a country that needs a Certification rather than an Apostille, first get a county authentication from the probate judge of the county where the notary is commissioned (statewide rule) [32]. We didn't find a Montgomery County price for this.
More on certified copies: how to get a certified copy.

USPS money order fees are national: $2.65 for $0.01 to $500.00, and $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.00. Pay with cash or a debit card, not a credit card. The limit is $1,000 per domestic money order [34]. Other sellers: money order guide.
